2008 Night of Champions Results

Night of Champions has officially concluded! Just this past week saw several WWE superstars and their respective titles move to different rosters. In fact, every title except for the Intercontinental, Women's and tag team titles moved to a new show. Tonight's event saw the changing over of three of the titles within the WWE. Here are full match by match brief recaps and results for the June 29, 2008 WWE Pay-Per-View.

Finlay & Hornswoggle vs. The Miz & John Morrison
WWE Tag Team titles

Just as it seemed thew father/son duo was ready to capture the tag titles, Miz and Morrison outsmarted them. Finlay was able to hit a drop kick from the corner ropes for a near fall. Finlay followed up with a slam and then went over to hit Miz. Finlay was able to hit the Celtic Cross, slamming Morrison to the mat, but Miz quickly knocked him off the apron. With Finlay out of the picture, Hornswoggle climbed to the top turnbuckle, but Morrison grabs him, then slams him to the mat. Morrison then took the pin on his smaller opponent for the victory!

Winners: The Miz & John Morrison win by pinfall over Finlay & Hornswoggle to retain the World Tag Team titles.

Chavo Guerrero vs. Matt Hardy
United States Championship

Matt was set up for the Twist of Fate but Chavo managed to escape and rolled Hardy into an excruciating leg submission. Matt was able to get over to the ropes to break it, but clearly his knee was giving him trouble. Chavo began to do his Three Amigos suplex but as he went for the third, Matt quickly hits the Twist of Fate to capture the pinfall.

Winner: Matt Hardy wins via pinfall over Chavo Guerrero to retain the United States Championship.

Mark Henry vs. Big Show vs. Kane
ECW Title match

It was a battle of 3 of WWE's biggest and baddest over Kane's ECW title here! Mark Henry seemed to be out of the picture as the Big Show battled it out with Kane. After receiving a massive Big Show chokeslame, Kane sat up and grabbed Show by the throat. Big Show retaliated and sent Kane into the ring corner. Show was able to deliver another big move with the belly-to-belly suplex on Kane, but again Kane kicked out at 2. Show tried to climb the ropes for a huge move, but Kane got up and delivered the uppercut to Show, followed by a superplex. With Kane still down on the mat after the move, Mark Henry came over to splash down on Kane for the three count.

Winner: Mark Henry wins via pinfall over Kane & Big Show to become new ECW champion.

Ted Dibiase & Mystery Partner vs. Cody Rhodes & Hardcore Holly
World Tag Team titles

Tonight's first mystery was who the WWE World Tag Team Champions Hardcore Holly and Cody Rhodes would face along with Ted DiBiase. DiBiase announced prior to the match that his partner had sent him a message saying he was running late. DiBiase asked if they could postpone the match a bit until his partner's ready, but Dibiase was told he can't wait, but he can forfeit. Due to his partner not being there, the match began as a 2 on 1, with Dibiase against the champs.

To start things off Dibiase requests Hardcore Holly to face him rather than Rhodes. Holly made the tag to his partner Cody Rhodes, but Rhodes made a surprising move, by DDT-ing his own partner to the mat! DiBiase then made the huge announcement, his mystery partner is in fact Cody Rhodes! Cody quickly tags in DiBiase who applies the Million Dollar Dream on Holly and then picks up the pinfall. Dibiase and Rhodes are the new WWE World Tag champs!

Winners: Ted Dibiase & Cody Rhodes win via pinfall over Hardcore Holly to win the WWE World Tag team titles.

Kofi Kingston vs. Chris Jericho
Intercontinental title match

Prior to the event, the IC title was the only one without a match, but that quickly changed. Chris Jericho was in the ring taunting Shawn Michaels and the fans yet again, but soon learned his opponent was the very talented youngster and new Raw member, Kofi Kingston. Jericho slammed Kofi to the mat, then hits the Lionsault off the ropes. Jericho was able to put Kofi into the Walls of Jericho submission but soon became distracted. Shawn Michaels appears from the crowd and delivers Sweet Chin Music on Cade. Jericho knocked Michaels off the apron but Kingston hits Jericho with Trouble in Paradise for the three count.

Winner: Kofi Kingston wins via pinfall over Chris Jericho to win the Intercontinental title.

Katie Lea vs. Mickie James
WWE Women's title

Weeks ago, the new diva Katie Lea vowed to take away Mickie's title, but it wasn't to be tonight! At one point in the match, Mickie tried for the DDT but Katie put her into an arm bar submission hold. Mickie escaped the hold but as she got up, Katie sent her into the corner. Katie tried for a belly-to-back suplex but Mickie countered it with a huge DDT for the three count to keep her title!

Winner: Mickie James wins via pinfall over Katie Lea to retain the WWE Women's title.

Batista vs. Edge
World Heavyweight title

Earlier in the night, Batista promised he'd be returning to Raw as the new champion. Unfortunately, Edge & La Familia got in the way of that. During tonight's match, Batista finally hit the signature Batista Bomb and was ready to win. Vickie Guerrero was ringside and yanked the referee as he tried to count Batista's pinfall. Edge then went for a Spear, but missed and hit into the corner. Edge was on the outside of the ring being counted out, but then pulled the ref outside and gave him the beatdown. Vickie Guerrero called for a new referee to be sent down. Just then, Chavo Guerrero showed up wearing a referee uniform. An enraged Batista pulled Vickie into the ring, then tossed her out onto Bam Neely, Hawkins, Ryder and Chavo. Due to the distraction, Edge set up and was able to hit the Spear on Batista. Chavo quickly got into the ring and counted the pinfall for Edge!

Winner: Edge wins by pinfall over Batista to retain the World Heavyweight title.

John Cena vs. Triple H
WWE Title

In their only prior one one one contest, John Cena was able to defeat Triple H at Wrestlemania, using the STFU submission to make HHH tap out. In tonight's WWE Title match, Cena managed to get his STFU submission hold locked on Triple H again. HHH crawled his way over to try to grab the ropes, but Cena pulled him right back into the ring, and tried for the STFU hold again. The Game countered this time and slapped on a cross-face submission hold to wear Cena down even more. Cena was able to escape and get to his feet then hoists HHH up for the FU. Hunter used his elbows to escape it then was able to hit the Pedigree for the pinfall victory!

Winner: Triple H wins via pinfall over John Cena to retain the WWE title.

With the conclusion of tonight's PPV, we saw the ECW title move back to its home with newcomer Mark Henry. We also saw Cody Rhodes turn on his longtime tag team partner to help Ted Dibiase win the tag titles. Smackdown continues to hold both of the major titles within the WWE. And the newest Raw member, Kofi Kingston was able to capture his very first WWE title, the Intercontinental title, thanks to a little help from the Showstopper. Congratulations to all of tonight's winners! Make sure to tune in to Raw on USA Monday at 9PM EST for all of the fallout from tonight's Pay Per View!
