WWE's Power of 25

wwe power 25 triple h edge
(Edge and Game take the top spots)

On the latest rankings (2/28/09) of WWE.com's Power 25, the two current major champs are at the 1 and 2 spots with Edge at #1, followed by Triple H at #2. Randy Orton checks in at #3 while ECW Champ Jack Swagger and John Cena are positioned at 4 and 5. Of these 5, realistically only Cena and Swagger have seen recent competition, while the other 3 have been involved in various antics on their shows. So how do they select the WWE Divas, stars and rank em'? According to the site, "the rankings are based on victories, quality of opponents, momentum and overall in-ring dominance, as well as intangibles". It seems as if the "intangibles" may weigh in heavier than matches, since both Edge and Triple H have held their titles but not really fought in any matches. Edge is at the 1 spot for helping Big Show defeat John Cena via his ringside distraction. It's hard to see why that qualifies him for the 1 spot. Triple H went on a warpath on Raw as he swung a Sledgehammer at almost everything that moved, or didn't move, in front of him. So basically the intangibles of two champions causing chaos allowed them to be at the top 2 spots on the list. Meanwhile other stars put in impressive performances in the ring.

Case in point, ECW Champ Jack Swagger seems like a more worthy #1 choice for the Power 25. Jack successfully defeated Christian in a grueling title match this past week on ECW to retain his title. Swagger's had a handful of losses in recent memory, but he became ECW champion very quickly into his young wrestling career and has successfully kept the title. This isn't a Swagger promotional piece, but you'd have to wonder why he'd be below Cena or Orton. Another case, how about a superstar with an impressive win-loss record? Smackdown superstar, Vladimir Kozlov defeated the Undertaker, yet sits a notch below him at #7 on the list. Kozlov is undefeated in singles action, so would that not make him at least a top 3 until he loses? It's an interesting list to say the least, maybe based more on storylines that need hyping before Wrestlemania 25. Also of interest, there's a note that the Great Khali was dropped off this week's list for not fighting in a recent match, yet Maryse is #25 and didn't fight on Smackdown either. Ok, Maryse is prettier, but let's not digress from how the list is formed...

Now if the WWE Universe voted on the Power 25 list would it change drastically? Would John Cena always rank at #1 with most if not all the heels ranking in the lower spots on the list? You better believe it, and that would not help to hype the Wrestlemania 25 main events or feuds. Edge certainly wouldn't get near the level of love he has to pull off a #1 ranking two straight weeks, which is why the WWE keeps the ranking power completely in their hands.
