2010 Slammy Awards Review - CM Punk Mystery

This past Monday marked a special 3-hour long Raw, not only to bring Smackdown and Raw together before the 2010 TLC PPV matches, but also to celebrate the major achievements in wrestling for 2010. The 2010 Slammy Awards have now been handed out, so it's time to look back at the hits and misses, the winners and the snubs. Are there any snubs in these awards or should we just accept it like many of the storylines full of holes in the plots?

The first contention would have to be giving a Superstar of the Year award based on fan vote. Was there really any doubt who would garner the popular fan vote? Put Cena's name in any category to vote on and pretty much he'd be the winner. If you were to give that award based on body of work in the past year, The Miz would seem a more fitting choice, holding the tag titles, US title, winning Money in the Bank and the WWE Title all in 2010. Cena just seemed to fit into the theme of the night with his re-hiring and the whole Nexus story.

Another strange award was the Diva of the Year determined by a Battle Royal. Honestly, if Gail Kim, Tamina or Rosa won that battle royal would they really deserve "Diva of the Year?" They're all lovely, but let's be serious, Michelle McCool and Layla should have just received the award based on the past year's work.

Someone mentioned on another post that there was no award given for Tag Team of the Year. Maybe that's a good acknowledgement that tag team wrestling is about gone in the WWE?

How about Wade Barrett able to arrange his own match for TLC? Maybe he contacted the Raw GM to arrange it, but how is it that Barrett has such direct contact with the GM and can do this? With that whole Cena re-hiring, there doesn't seem to be too much fuel to the fire for Cena's latest match with Barrett. Cena's been having the last laugh at the expense of Nexus for weeks, so it's not like anyone feels bad for him anymore.

Surprisingly the biggest shocker of the evening came from a guy who isn't wrestling right now, CM Punk. Punk won the "Despicable Me" Slammy for his spooky serenade of "Happy Birthday" to Rey Mysterio's daughter on Smackdown. During his acceptance speech, Punk alluded to their being someone backstage he's got a grudge to resolve with. Punk said he will get even. Speculation is now running rampant as to who Punk is talking about. Remember that Punk put Evan Bourne on the shelf, and at one point he had been eyeing Evan Bourne and the US Title. Since then, he's been relegated to desk work, aka the commentator position. Any idea who Punk might be talking about?

With the conclusion of the Slammy Awards, we now will be heading towards the 2010 TLC Pay-Per-View on Sunday, with several new matches added including the Cena vs Barrett Chairs match, Sheamus vs Morrison #1 Contender Ladder match, and a Divas Table Match. Saturday will be the pre-recorded "Tribute to the Troops" Special airing on NBC, one night before the PPV. It will be interesting to see if Cena is wrestling on that show, or shows up as Santa Claus to surprise Nexus.
