Smackdown Results 07/09/10

Smackdown Results from Atlanta, GA:

The show opened with highlights from 2 weeks ago when Jack Swagger and Big Show fought. Swagger put an ankle lock on Big Show and despite Show grabbing the ropes, Swagger wouldn't break the hold. He kept it on after the bell to injur Big Show. On last week's show Mysterio and Swagger were part of a tag team match. Once again, Swagger put the ankle lock submission on Rey, but wouldn't release the hold when the ref ordered him to. He kept the hold on Mysterio after the bell until Big Show chased Swagger off.

Drew McIntyre was introduced already in the ring to open the show. Just as he was about to speak, GM Teddy Long's theme music came on. Long walked to the ring all smiles. He asked Drew what he's doing back, because he was deported 2 weeks ago. Drew said he's back and all citizenship issues were resolved. Drew called Teddy "Mr. Long". He said on the flight home he realize he has wronged Teddy in many ways recently. Drew said it's never too late to say "I'm Sorry". Teddy said it's never too early to say "you're a liar". Teddy said without Mr. McMahon around he doesn't have an advantage anymore.

Long said he feels that Drew will now be on the same level as all the other Smackdown stars. Drew said he agreed and wants to personally nominate Long for the 2011 Hall of Fame class. He suggested it would be great to see Teddy go into the Hall at WM27 in Atlanta, his home town, just as Drew was headlining as World Champion. Long said the only way Drew could be World Champion is by winning the Money in the Bank match. Teddy said he thinks Drew could win MITB, if he were in it. Teddy then said Drew needs to do one thing to get in the match: get down and beg.

Drew was hesitant about it, so Teddy had footage from 3 weeks ago shown when Drew made Teddy get down on his knees in the ring, humiliating him. The crowd chanted "on your knees" at McIntyre, so he finally did it. Long had him tell him "he's the most handsome, debanair, high-class, sharp-dressed and intelligent." Teddy had him also say "it's an honor and a privilege to have Teddy Long as his boss". Drew got up and asked if he's in the Smackdown MITB match now. Long said not yet, and if he wants in he needs to earn it by defeating Kofi Kingston.

Also tonight, MVP, Dolph Ziggler and Chavo Guerrero will compete in a Triple Threat match with the winner getting a spot in Smackdown's MITB match.

MVP vs. Chavo Guerrero vs. Dolph Ziggler
MITB Qualifying match

A blue Money in the Bank briefcase was hanging over the ring. Vickie Guerrero lead Dolph Ziggler to the ring, then joined Matt Striker and Todd Grisham for commentary.

Grisham remarked that it seems more like a handicap match with Chavo and Ziggler both teaming up on MVP. Vickie snapped back that it's every man for himself. MVP finally got free by sending both guys out of the ring before a commercial break.

MVP was able to shove Chavo into the corner where Ziggler had got on the top rope. Ziggler fell onto the corner, allowing MVP to get up and Superplex him down. Chavo got up while both MVP and Ziggler were down. Chavo looked at the briefcase hanging up then at Vickie. He cautiously went over and pinned MVP with Vickie screaming at him from ringside. Ziggler was soon up and started beating up Chavo, yelling at him for disrupting "the plan".

Chavo started going after Ziggler and hit the Tres Amigos suplexes. MVP was back up and hit a backdrop on Chavo. He threw Ziggler up in the air and let him land face down on the mat. With momentum, he hit the Facebuster on Chavo, then went for the Ballin' Elbow drop. Ziggler was back in but MVP tossed him out, then hit the elbow. He hit "The Play of the Day" on Chavo and took the pin.
The ref was about to count it, but Vickie yanked him out of the ring before 3. Vickie argued with the ref outside the ring. With MVP distracted, Ziggler rushed in and jumped on Ziggler's back with the sleeperhold. He soon wore MVP down to take the win.

Winner: Dolph Ziggler wins via submission over MVP to qualify for Smackdown's MITB ladder match.

Smackdown returned with a promo for its newest superstar, Alberto Del Rio, with a video cut at his home. He talked about the quality of inspiration, and how one inspires others. He said you do so by never showing an ounce of fear and always accomplish the impossible.

Josh Matthews was in the training room with Rey Mysterio and the WWE main physician Dr. Sampson. Dr. Sampson talked about the anterior ligament tear Rey suffered due to Jack Swagger. Sampson said they're using various treatment concepts to help Rey get rehabbed. Matthews asked if the injury will affect his chances at retaining the title.

Just then Swagger burst into the training room. Swagger scared off Matthews and the two trainers, then grabbed Rey in the ankle lock. He dragged Rey down the hall with the ankle lock cinched in as Mysterio screamed. Swagger stopped at one point and slammed Rey down hard on the pavement. He picked up Rey and slammed him against a board, then dragged him down the hallway backstage some more. Swagger put the ankle lock hold back on Mysterio then began to back out into the arena with it locked on. Swagger kept the hold on with WWE refs and staff nearby not doing anything about it. Finally, The Big Show came rushing over to chase Swagger backstage. Medical staff came over to check on Mysterio, as did Big Show.

When Smackdown returned they replayed what just happened to Rey Mysterio at the hands of Jack Swagger. They showed Big Show carrying Mysterio backstage so he wouldn't have to stand on the hurt ankle.

Christian & Matt Hardy vs. Vance Archer & Curt Hawkins

They showed what happened during last week's Peep Show involving Matt Hardy and Christian with a bunch of ladders. Both guys vowed to win MITB. Hardy ended up throwing Christian into a ladder to end the segment.

Archer had control against Hardy after a side slam. He had a near fall then started yelling at Hardy to do something. Hardy made a comeback and hit a Tornado DDT from the corner. Hardy began to crawl over to Christian for a tag. Hardy put his hand out for the tag, but Christian yanked him arm first against the ropes, causing Hardy to fall to the outside. Christian walked off leaving Hardy by himself for the tag match. Archer and Hawkins hit their finishers in the ring to win it.

Winners: Vance Archer & Curt Hawkins win by pinfall over Matt Hardy & Christian.

Kofi Kingston vs. Drew McIntyre
MITB Qualifying for McIntyre

They showed what Drew went through in the ring earlier at GM Teddy Long's orders.

Late in the match, Kofi took Drew down and then hit the Boom Boom double leg drop. He went for the Trouble in Paradise, but McIntyre ducked it. Kofi came back though with another one and went for the pin. Somehow, McIntyre kicked out at the last second.

The match kept going with more offense exchanged including a suicide dive from Kofi out onto Drew McIntyre against the barricade. The ref began a countout with Kofi up first and rolling Drew back into the ring. Kofi got on the apron where Drew was laying, and prepared for a legdrop. However, when Kofi came near Drew, McIntyre grabbed Kofi's trunks and yanked him against the ring post. He pulled Kofi in through the ropes for the Future Shock DDT to win it.

Winner: Drew McIntyre wins via pinfall over Kofi Kingston to qualify for the MITB Ladder match.

All 8 spots are now filled for the Smackdown MITB Ladder match: Kane, Christian, Matt Hardy, Dolph Ziggler, Drew McIntyre, Kofi Kingston, Big Show and Dashing Cody Rhodes.

Matt Striker and Todd Grisham reviewed how Serena cleared CM Punk's name last week as Kane was about to destroy him. She had black and white security cam footage from a bar showing CM Punk, Gallows and the mystery man showing up to stop her from drinking. CM Punk yelled at Serena afterwords for what she did.

Rosa Mendes was working out on an aerobic step backstage when Luke Gallows and CM Punk came walking up. Punk looked at her then shook his head and the two headed for the ring.

Another Alberto Del Rio promo video was shown. He talked about how knowledge is power and how many have squandered their education at a formal university. Del Rio said he always consumed as much knowledge as possible. He called himself the product of a superior education, Alberto Del Rio.

CM Punk and Luke Gallows were in the ring to address the Serena situation from last week. Gallows called Serena to the ring if she had even one shred of dignity left. Serena came out from backstage with a microphone in hand. She said it's been the hardest week of her life and said Punk is everything to her. She said she made a terrible mistake when she got drunk and also when she defied him. She said she did what she did last week to protect Punk from Kane.

Serena begged for forgiveness from Punk. Gallows then told Serena she's the most pathetic person he's ever seen. He said he's ashamed to have called her a sister in SES. Gallows said Serena was a role model for women around the world, but she ruined it. Gallows told Serena if she's sorry she'll leave SES forever. Punk snatched the mic out of Gallows' hand. Punk told Gallows he's right it's his decision and he forgives her. Gallows shot a look at both of them, then left the ring. Serena promised she will never fail him again. Punk leaned down and said "you better not". He put his arm out and Serena hugged him. Gallows shook his head up on the stage.

Dashing Cody Rhodes came out with new theme music and a mirror on he digital screen graphics. He paused to admire himself and it showed up on the digital screen.

JTG vs. Dashing Cody Rhodes

JTG had momentum late in the match as he rushed towards Rhodes in the corner. Cody hit him with a hook to take JTG down. From there he used a faceplant, then whipped JTG to the ropes. JTG recovered again as he came off the ropes and punched Cody in the face. JTG went for a kick, but Cody grabbed his foot then spun JTG around. From there he hit Cross Rhodes for the win.

Winner: Cody Rhodes wins via pinfall over JTG.

Josh Matthews spoke with Kelly Kelly backstage. He asked Kelly about her upcoming title match against the WWE Women's Champion Layla. Layla came up and started talking trash. She pulled out a spray can but Kelly smacked it out of her hand. She grabbed Layla around the throat, but Michelle McCool rushed in and attacked Kelly from behind. Layla kicked Kelly in the gut several times, before her and Michelle left. WWE officials and Tiffany rushed in to make sure Kelly was ok.

Matt Striker thanked I Fight Dragons for providing the official MITB PPV theme song "Money", now available at iTunes.

They replayed some of the highlights of what Jack Swagger did to Rey Mysterio earlier, with Big Show finally coming to Rey's rescue.

Josh Matthews interviewed Big Show backstage. Show said he was the first one to wind up in Swagger's ankle lock and he's never felt pain like that before. Show said Rey is suffering right now and he knows how he's feeling. Show said Swagger's ankle lock is the closest he's felt to having his bones break. Show said he's a giant and heals fast. He said if Swagger wants to make people suffer and put fear in people's minds, tonight he's going to put fear into Jack Swagger, making him suffer.

Big Show vs. Jack Swagger

Swagger was introduced first for the main event, followed by Big Show. Swagger tried to ground Show early, going after the hurt ankle. Show wasn't having it and soon slammed Swagger down to gain control. In the corner of the ring, Show yelled at Swagger then slapped his massive hand against Jack's chest several times. Show hit a hip splash on Swagger in the corner, then ran against the ropes to take Swagger down again. Swagger rolled out of the ring, but Show went to grab his hair and bring him onto the apron.

Swagger yanked Show's arm down against the top rope, then pulled him against the ringpost. Swagger grabbed Show's ankle and slammed it against the post, then got in the ring fast to try an ankle lock. Show managed to kick Swagger out of the ring. As Swagger got back in, Show shoved him back over the top rope. On the outside, Show continued going after Swagger up the ramp, beating on him as the ref counted both men out. Swagger tried to back up on the stage as Show stalked him.

Swagger faked out Big Show and kicked him in the hurt ankle area, then slammed his leg against the stage. Swagger backed away from the stage and backstage, admiring how he put Big Show down. Referees came over to help out Big Show. As Show went backstage smirking, Kane grabbed him by the throat and shoved him into a back room with a red glowing light. Kane sat Swagger down in a chair. He yelled at Swagger saying he seems to like making people suffer so he made his brother The Undertaker suffer.

Swagger screamed that he was innocent and has an alibi just like CM Punk. Kane told him to prove it and Swagger said he will next week. Kane said he has one week to prove it or he'll be damned to hell for eternal suffering.

Winner: Big Show and Jack Swagger fight to a double countout.
