Smackdown Meltdown: Vickie & Edge

On Friday night's episode of Smackdown both the Rated-R Superstar and General Manager snapped. It had already been a disastrous week for the couple. Even though Edge successfully defended his World Heavyweight title at Night of Champions, he lost it just one night later. On Raw, a beatdown by Batista provided CM Punk with the perfect opportunity to cash in a Money in the Bank title shot. Punk became the new World Heavyweight champ and Edge left Raw without his belt, furious.

Vickie Guerrero, Edge's fiancee and Smackdown GM, was not happy either. On Smackdown she berated Ryder & Hawkins for not doing more to save Edge, then sent them out to do battle with Jesse and Festus. Tensions were extremely high as Edge arrived to Smackdown, and he and his serious love interest got into a huge confrontation. The end result was Edge telling Vickie their July 11th Wedding was now canceled.

Now is this all a true turn of things for the couple or a new plan being hatched? It's quite possibly one big mind game designed to snag the Game, Triple H. With Edge set to go for the WWE title in a few weeks, they (Vickie & Edge) may be looking to deceive the champ. This wouldn't be the first time the couple has used trickery to defeat a champion and steal away a title. The Game is an expert at mindgames himself, so in a few weeks we will see who comes out on top. Until then, Smackdown's major champion continues to be Triple H and its once lovestruck couple is on the ropes.

In other Smackdown events, we now have a match set for the first ever Divas Championship belt. Michelle McCool will do battle with Natalya at a Time to be determined. Michelle seems to be the likely heir and first ever winner of a title that may last as long as the Hardcore title. The main event match of Smackdown was easily one of the best so far this year with Matt Hardy in a Fatal Fourway against Chavo Guerrero, Shelton Benjamin and Mr. Kennedy. It seemed like a match straight out of a Pay Per View with a great finish as Matt used a Twist of Fate on Shelton to drive him on top of Chavo. Matt took the pin and retains the US title to continue his win streak.

On a final note, Smackdown seems to like to air promos for its newest superstars arrivals to the show. Recent examples are Jeff Hardy and Maria, who both came over for Raw but didn't appear on the very next Smackdown show. These "coming soon" ads seem a bit anti-climactic as most of the WWE roster has appeared on all of the TV shows. WWE would do best to plan out surprise arrivals on a random Smackdown episode without its audience knowing. These are the sorts of things that make each of the TV shows more fun for fans to experience.
