Smackdown Results 01/07/11

Smackdown Results from Tucson, AZ:

The show opened with a video package to emphasize the two main matches of the night: Kane vs Edge for the World Championship in a Last Man Standing Match, as well as Rey Mysterio vs Alberto Del Rio in a Best 2 out of 3 Falls Match.

The commentary team of Striker, Matthews and Cole was on hand to discuss the two matches, right before Edge and Kane made their entrances for the title match.

Kane vs. Edge
World Championship Last Man Standing Match

This match was all over the place including in the audience, backstage at the concession stands and ultimately ringside. The commentators saw their table destroyed. Kane tossed 3 or 4 steel chairs into the ring to use on Edge. However, Edge got Kane with the chair when he got into the ring. Edge was able to connect on a Spear in the ring as Kane stood up, then got a steel chair to bash down on Kane's left knee. The ref started the count with kane down. Kane tried to crawl over and pull himself by the ropes. He was almost up at 8, then fell back down, losing the match.

Winner: Edge wins the Last Man Standing Match to retain the World Championship.

When Smackdown returned the commentators were seated with a collapsed commentary table.

Kofi Kingston vs Dolph Ziggler
Intercontinental Title Match

Cole said there's a "Dolph Ziggler Day" coming up at Kent State University. Vickie Guerrero was on hand at ringside for Ziggler's title match.

In the closing moments, Kofi was up on the corner. Ziggler went up to try a Superplex but Kofi held onto the ropes then fought him off. Kofi hit a top rope Gore buster to drop Ziggler to the mat, then connected on a crossbody pinfall. The ref counted the 1-2-3 and awarded the IC title to Kofi. Kofi celebrated on the corner with the championship as the commentators reviewed the highlight of his win.

As Kofi was celebrating, Ziggler attacked him from behind and hit the Zig Zag to bring him down. Vickie got on the mic screaming "Excuse Me!" Vickie said Teddy Long isn't there tonight so she orders a championship rematch right now.

Winner: Kofi Kingston wins via pinfall over Dolph Ziggler to become new Intercontinental Champion.

Dolph Ziggler vs Kofi Kingston
Intercontinental Title Rematch

Ziggler immediately rushed at Kofi in the corner, but Kingston moved away and Ziggler hit the corner. At one point Dolph tried to get Kofi on his feet. As Dolph stood Kofi up, Kingston was able to wake up, hitting Trouble in Paradise. Kofi Kingston took the three count, again.

Post-match, Kofi celebrated as Vickie screamed at Dolph from outside the ring about losing the rematch.

Winner: Kofi Kingston wins via pinfall to retain the Intercontinental Title.

When Smackdown returned Vickie was backstage chewing out Dolph. Dolph told Vickie it was a boneheaded move to order a rematch. Vickie screamed at Dolph calling him a "two-time loser." Dolph said maybe it's time she finds a new boyfriend then, and left the scene. Vickie became more enraged, screaming her head off in the office.

The commentators introduced the Raw Rebound which highlighted Orton beating Sheamus and Barrett in the steel cage for #1 Contender to the WWE Title at Royal Rumble.

Kelly Kelly was walking backstage, when Drew McIntyre caught up with her. He wished her luck on her match tonight. Kelly asked if he really meant that. Drew said he knows she doesn't like what he does in the ring but it's all he ever dreamt of doing. He said tonight he could become #1 contender for the World Title. He asked that Kelly show him the same support he'll show her. Drew wished her good luck again, and Kelly thanked him before walking off.

Big Show vs. Cody Rhodes vs. Drew McIntyre
Triple Threat #1 Contender's Match

Vickie Guerrero arrived out to the stage saying as acting GM tonight she was making this a Fatal Fourway. Vickie added Dolph Ziggler to the match. Ziggler arrived to the ring still holding his head from the Trouble in Paradise kick he sustained. Big Show gave each of the guys in the ring a huge chest slap in the early part of the match. McIntyre and Ziggler were both knocked to the outside.

Late in the match, Show was in control after tossing Rhodes high up and letting him drop to the mat. Show had a huge takedown on Rhodes then a Spinebuster on Ziggler. He signaled for a finisher, but Wade Barrett rushed to the ring and clipped Show's leg. Wade continued his attack, pounding away on Show and then landing an elbow drop off the corner. Barrett admired his handiwork then left the ring. Rhodes took advantage with the kick from off the ropes. Show still managed to escape the pinfall.

Ziggler rushed in next and hit the Zig Zag on Show. Ziggler had the cover, but again Show threw his opponent off. Next up, McIntyre arrived in and hit the Future Shock DDT. He thought he had the big win, but again Show escaped. Show let out a roar then shoved McIntyre out over the ropes. Meanwhile, Rhodes and Ziggler snuck back in the ring. Ziggler signaled some sort of plan telling Rhodes to go at Show. As Cody started to, Ziggler grabbed him and hit the Zig Zag for the pinfall behind Big Show's back.

Post-match, Show and Rhodes down in the ring while McIntyre was down outside. Vickie celebrated with Dolph on the ramp.

Winner: Dolph Ziggler wins the Fatal Fourway to become #1 contender for the World Championship.

Kelly Kelly vs. Michelle McCool

Late in the match, Kelly had control of things and was ready to do her leg drop to the back of the head finisher. Layla got up on the apron to distract, allowing Michelle to turn Kelly's move into the Faithbreaker for the pinfall win.

Post-match, Layla and Michelle helped Kelly up then did a double face first slam of Kelly to the mat. Drew McIntyre came to the ring and told LayCool to leave right now. They both exited the ring as Drew checked on Kelly's status.

Winner: Michelle McCool wins via pinfall over Kelly Kelly.

Rey Mysterio vs Alberto Del Rio
Best 2 of 3 Falls Match

Ricardo Rodriguez made the standard intro in Spanish for Del Rio. Matthews said this would be the culmination of a major Smackdown rivalry. Del Rio cut a promo on the mic about how they are two types of Latinos, the rich ones and the ones who do tasks like car washing or gardening. He compared Mysterio to the latter type.

Striker noted that Rey Mysterio will be one of the 30 competitors in the Royal Rumble match. Early in the match, Rey kicked Del Rio against the ropes. He went for the 619 but Del Rio dropped down. Mysterio went for the 619 without Del Rio there, then got to his feet. Del Rio kicked Mysterio then was able to quickly get him into the Cross Armbreaker submission. After several moments, Rey tapped out to give Del Rio the first fall.

After a commercial, Mysterio took control despite favoring his hurt arm. Del Rio managed to almost get him in the submission hold again. Rey countered it into a pinfall. Del Rio escaped but again got sent against the ropes. He managed to get away from the 619 yet again, but Rey was able to use a headscissors turned into a pinfall to take Fall #2. Smackdown headed to commercial.

Late in this match, Mysterio had Del Rio on the apron near the corner and managed to hit the 619. Rodriguez went over to check on Del Rio on the outside and Rey flew off the corner to take both guys down. All 3 men were outside and struggling to get up. Rey got up and rolled Del Rio back in the ring as the ref kept counting. Rey went to rush back in, but Rodriguez grabbed Rey's leg around 8. Rey couldn't managed to shake him off and Mysterio got counted out for the third fall giving Del Rio the big win.

Winner: Alberto Del Rio wins the Best 2 of 3 Falls Match over Rey Mysterio.

Post-match, Del Rio celebrated and made his way up the ramp. Mysterio was able to catch Ricardo Rodriguez and started beating him around the ring, then brought him back inside. He ultimately finished him with a 619 and then his flying splash move off the top rope. Del Rio just watched from the stage area.

The commentators reviewed the "carnage" that had gone down on tonight's show including their demolished commentary table. They announced that next week Big Show and Wade Barrett will go one-on-one.
