The Next Champions for WWE?

We're a month removed from Wrestlemania 25, and a week or so past Backlash which produced 3 new champions in Edge, Randy Orton and Christian. Now that each of the major rosters has its next major champion, let's look at what may happen next with the rest of the titles within the ranks of the WWE. Below are discussions of the Intercontinental, United States, Divas, Womens and Unified Tag Championships, as well as who may be the next superstars to win the titles.

Intercontinental Championship
Current Champ: Rey Mysterio
Likely Successor: Chris Jericho
Other Contenders: John Morrison, Dolph Ziggler, Umaga

Just based on the recent Fatal Fourway matchup, it looks like Jericho may enter a feud with Mysterio to once again capture the IC title. John Morrison is also a former IC title holder, as is Umaga who seemed to be squashing Jeff Hardy quite a bit when he had the belt. Dolph Ziggler would be a new look champion and establish this guy's credibility, but at the same time it would further make the belt look like anyone and everyone has won it. I'm excluding CM Punk and Jeff Hardy here since they seem to be amongst the major title contenders. Kane just seems to be out of luck when it comes to WWE gold.

United States Championship
Current Champ: MVP
Likely Successor: Matt Hardy
Other Contenders: Big Show, The Miz, The Brian Kendrick

Matt Hardy's latest heel gimmick involved him using his arm (in a cast) to smash down across the back of Goldust's neck, and then collect a pinfall victory. This came after Matt whined about his Backlash loss to Jeff in an I Quit match. It seems like maybe Matt and MVP will renew their old rivalry, this time with Matt on the heel side and MVP the face. Matt would find a way to cheat and regain the US title yet again. The other contenders could just as easily be seen wearing the belt as well, based on their recent transfer to Raw. If The Miz gets the big push he may get, the US title may be a nice addition to his resume.

WWE Divas Championship
Current Champ: Maryse
Likely Successor: Kelly Kelly
Other Contenders: Beth Phoenix, Mickie James

Unless WWE is planning a major comedic moment where Santina Marella wins the title from Maryse, Kelly Kelly seems deserving of a title. She had been showing major improvement in the ring for some time, and just recently has seemed to be taken out of the spotlight. It'd make for a great battle of the blond divas as well. Beth Phoenix and Rosa Mendes are bound to enter in a feud at some point, so one of them may turn face and become the fan favorite taking on Maryse. Mickie James is the veteran diva favorite, and I wouldn't count Candice Michelle out either.

WWE Womens Championship
Current Champ: Melina
Likely Successor: Michelle McCool
Other Contenders: Alicia Fox, Gail Kim?

There seems to be slim pickings on Smackdown for contenders, but maybe that makes Alicia Fox an even stronger possibility. The fact she seemed to be a face valet/wrestler on ECW, but then recently teamed with McCool on Smackdown makes her an interesting possibility. Michelle has always been the strongest of the divas on Smackdown, so she makes the most logical choice to defeat Melina. Alicia Fox has looked good in the ring in various contests, while Gail Kim's a true question mark with how she hasn't been pushed a lot since here return to WWE. There's also Maria to consider, while Eve and Layla are busy dancing rather than wrestling.

Unified Tag Team Championship
Current Champs: Carlito & Primo Colon
Likely Succesors: Rhodes & Dibiase
Other Contenders: The Brian Kendrick & The Miz?

This one seems to be the no brainer of the list and may be the first of these titles we see change over. It seems like everything will align for Legacy, with Orton in command of the WWE title, and his understudies, Cody Rhodes & Ted Dibiase taking over the tag team belts. Recently, Dibiase defeated Carlito in a singles match on Smackdown, showing that the title match is inevitable. This may even go down at Backlash and be the only title we see change hands. There's not many other tag teams to choose from on Raw, unless we see The Miz & Brian Kendrick team up, or some other tag team thrown together like a Batista-Cena combo again.

Raw Recap 04.27.09

Raw Recap from Bridgeport, CT:

Vickie Guerrero was already in the ring as Raw began. She talked about how great it was that her husband Edge beat Cena for the World Heavyweight title in last night's Last Man Standing Match. She then introduced the brand new WWE Champion, Randy Orton. Orton arrived to the ring carrying his new belt, flanked by Rhodes & Dibiase. He spoke about how he did exactly what he said he would, by annihilating HHH last night and taking his WWE title. Highlights were shown of each of Orton's punt kicks to Vince, Shane and last night's to HHH. Orton said he picked apart the McMahon's one by one, and now the entire Raw locker room needs to answer to him. Orton said the fans might not like him but they'll show him respect. Vickie announced a #1 contender match for tonight between Big Show and Batista to determine who Orton defends the title against at Judgement Day.

As Orton continued to brag about how everyone must respect him, he was interrupted as MVP's theme music came on. MVP came out onto the ramp with a mic in hand and told Orton he doesn't answer to him. MVP said it's not Orton's show, it's Monday Night Raw. MVP then said if Batista or Big Show don't defeat him at Judgement Day, MVP will step up to do it. Dibiase and Rhodes began to tell MVP to head backstage. Orton walked over and whispered something to Vickie. Vickie said in addition to tonight's #1 Contender match, Raw will have MVP going against Randy Orton for the first time ever.

Kofi Kingston vs. The Brian Kendrick

Lillian Garcia introduced Kendrick as "Brian Kendrick" so he grabbed the mic to correct her when he got to the ring. In Kendrick's debut without Ezekiel Jackson on Raw, he faced the exciting high-flyer Kofi Kingston. Both men displayed impressive moves, with Kendrick getting chopped down by Kofi and then hit with a double leg drop. After the failed pinfall, Kendrick went for his finisher off the corner, but Kofi escaped it and flew back onto Kendrick. Kendrick reversed the pin and Kofi kicked out. After a spinning buzzsaw kick to Kendrick's head, Kofi finally got the winning pinfall.

Winner: Kofi Kingston wins via pinfall over The Brian Kendrick.

Michael Cole and Jerry Lawler discussed how emotional Backlash was, and showed slideshow pics of the Cena vs. Edge match. Big Show came out to interfere, throwing John Cena into a searchlight. Edge won the title as Cena failed to answer the ref's count. Lawler and Cole said it's doubtful Cena will show up tonight.

Backstage, Big Show and Vickie hugged in an office. Vickie thanked Big Show for what he did last night to help Edge. Show thanked her for the #1 contenders match and went for a kiss. Vickie turned her head and Show took exception. Vickie told him for the sake of Raw from here on out everything will be strictly professional. Show was upset, but said he understood and left the office.

A replay was shown from last night's Khali Kiss Cam at Backlash. Beth Phoenix came to the ring to challenge Santina, and ended up insulting Great Khali. Khali clocked Beth on the head, knocking her down, which allowed Santina to score a pinfall on Beth.

Brie Bella, Kelly Kelly, Mickie James & Santina Marella vs. Maryse, Rosa Mendes, Jillian Hall & Beth Phoenix
8 Divas Tag Match

Santina started off against Beth for a few moments, until Beth slapped her causing Santina to rush over and tag in Brie. Beth continued the punishment by beating up Brie, before tagging in Jillian who missed on a leg dorp, Brie rushed out of the ring and as Rosa Mendes went after her, she went under the ring. Soon Brie popped her head back out as did her twin sister Nikki. Rosa fell backwards and just then Hornswoggle popped his head out in between the Bella Twins who kissed him. Hornswoggle began chasing Rosa Mendes who ran and fell on the ramp. As Horney came back to the ring area, Beth and Maryse started to go after him so he rushed under the ring. As the two divas pulled the apron cover up, they were sprayed with a fire extinguisher. As Jillian was in the ring looking out at the action, Santina had tagged in. Santina rushed over and grabbed Jillian for the rollup pin.

After the win the divas celebrated with Santina. Santina got on the apron to taunt the heel divas. Hornswoggle came out from under the ring again and looked up Santina's skirt shocked. Mickie James pulled the skirt up and Hornswoggle eventually fell back in horror.

Winner: Brie Bella, Mickie James, Kelly Kelly & Santina Marella win via pinfall over Beth Phoenix, Rosa Mendes, Jillian Hall & Maryse.

Michael Cole & Jerry Lawler talked about how the recent WWE Draft really is paying dividends for Raw already. They showed the recent additions, the Bella Twins, Mr. Kennedy and Matt Hardy.

Goldust vs. Matt Hardy

Matt Hardy came down to the ring wearing an arm cast on his right arm. Slideshow pics were shown from the I Quit match at Backlash. Matt Hardy lost after Jeff had tied him down to a table. Matt tried to talk Jeff out of things and eventually yelled that he quit. Jeff still jumped off a ladder onto Matt even though he already won. Matt told the fans he suffered a broken hand due to Jeff's reckless actions last night. Matt said he didn't quit and has never quit anything in his life. Matt said after breaking his hand last night in the match, he had to quit. Matt said he's being forced to wrestle tonight despite the injury. Matt said he's wrestling under protest tonight.

Matt continually eluded Goldust during the match by escaping the ring. At one point Matt slid to the outside and the ref was talking to Goldust in the ring. Matt rushed back in and clubbed Goldust in the head from behind, then took the pinfall.

Winner: Matt Hardy wins via pinfall over Goldust.

MVP vs. Randy Orton

In a non-title matchup, Raw's newest member, MVP, faced the brand new WWE champion, Randy Orton. After exchanging early arm holds, MVP took some control against Orton and was able to knock him to the mat. Orton regained control and forced MVP to the corner hitting him with a few forearm uppercuts. MVP responded by avoiding Orton charging at him in the other corner, then tossed him to the mat. Orton again regained control, but as he whipped MVP to the corner and went at him, MVP tripped Orton into the bottom turnbuckle, then ran over and kicked Orton over the ropes to the outside.

Raw returned from a break and Orton had MVP down in a headlock. MVP got back to a vertical base, but Orton again brought him down, trying for a pinfall, then reapplying a headlock. Orton and MVP started exchanging punches back and forth, then MVP kicked Orton down. Eventually MVP had serious momentum as he hit a Facebuster then did his "Ballin" elbowdrop on Orton. Orton kicked out at 2. MVP had Orton in the corner and rushed at him, but Orton dodged his boot then grabbed MVP's leg and tossed him out over the ropes. Orton started to recover in the ring as MVP was layed outside.

Just then, Shane McMahon rushed into the ring with a Kendo stick. Shane began cracking the stick across Orton repeatedly before clocking him on the head. Shane did a flying elbow drop off the corner just as Rhodes and Dibiase came running to the ring, steel chairs in hand. Shane quickly escaped the ring then ran up the stairs into the audience. Shane then stood up with a spotlight on him from the crowd pointing and taunting Orton & Legacy in the ring.

Winner: No winner announced due to Shane McMahon's interference. DQ on MVP.

Again highlights were shown of what Big Show did to John Cena last night. Highlights were also shown of what just went down between Shane McMahon and Randy Orton with Legacy also getting involved.

Lawler and Cole continued to talk about the various superstars the WWE Draft brought to Raw including Big Show and Divas champion Maryse.

John Cena vs. The Miz

Mike The Miz Mizanin came to the ring and told everyone he was the most valuable draft pick in the draft. Miz started bragging about his accomplishments, including the fact he has phone numbers of various women such as Hilary Duff and Paris Hilton. The Miz suggested the fans should Google him to see the proof of how great he is. Miz said he's now here to take on the biggest and baddest superstars on Raw. Miz said he's here to challenge John Cena on his first night and demanded a referee come to the ring. Miz kept calling out Cena to come out. Cena's music finally hit and the fans started going wild. The music stopped and Miz got on the mic again asking Cena if he was scared to fight.

Miz continued taunting Cena as the fans chanted. Miz began complaining that the same superstars are in main events year after year. Miz pretended that John Cena chose not to show up, so Miz won by forfeit. Miz said "Miz 1, John Cena 0". Miz told Lillian to announce Miz the winner by forfeit. Miz left the ring and grabbed the mic to announce himself as winner. Lawler and Cole discussed the fact that everybody knew Cena wasn't going to be here tonight.

Winner: The Miz declares himself winner due to forfeit by John Cena.

Highlights were shown of the recent WWE European tour in England, Wales, Germany, Austria, Ireland and France.

The Colons vs. Jamie Noble & Chavo Guerrero

This Thursday Carlito will wrestle solo against Ted Dibiase of Legacy. At one point in the match, both Noble and Chavo were on the outside. Noble rushed into the ring then back outside to distract Primo, allowing Chavo to sneak behind him and shoved him out. Chavo took control when Primo was back in the ring, applying the headlock.

Chavo and Noble started to doubleteam and keep Primo away from Carlito. Chavo tried to jump off the corner at Primo, but Primo jumped up to dropkick him in the air. Primo managed to tag in Carlito who rushed in as Noble tagged in. Carlito had momentum. At one point Carlito had Chavo knocked outside and pinned Noble inside. Chavo was able to pull Carlito off the pin, but Primo soon jumped off the apron onto Chavo outside. Carlito grabbed Noble and hit the Backstabber.

Winner: The Colons win via pinfall over Jamie Noble & Chavo Guerrero.

Batista was shown walking down a hallway backstage on his way out for the main event. Josh Matthews caught up to Batista asking if he felt responsible for HHH's loss last night. Batista looked into the camera saying he feels for HHH but is going to pay him back by beating Big Show, then hurting Orton and then taking Orton's title away.

Vickie Guerrero was introduced and came onto the ramp to announce something. She showed highlights of Orton's recent rampages against the McMahons, including the Punt kicks to Shane and Vince, and last night to HHH. Vickie announced that next week it will be Randy Orton vs. Shane McMahon. Big Show arrived out and gave Vickie a look, then walked to the ring all business.

Batista vs. Big Show
#1 Contender's Match

After several lockup attempts, Show went for the early Chokeslam, but Batista countered and tried for a Batista Bomb. Show countered that and the two men stared at one another as Raw went on break. Raw returned with Show picking Batista apart, and chopping him down to the mat. Batista responded back with a Spear on Show in the corner, but Show hammered him back down then stood on him. Show continued to smash his hand down on Batista around the ring, then hit a scoop slam. Show put Batista in a Boston Crab type submission to wear The Animal down. Batista tried to fight back as Show put a Bear Hug on him.

Batista finally escaped Show by punching at him and raking his eyes. He delivered a double boot at Show as he came at him in the corner, then started to work to chop him down. Despite Batista fighting back, Big Show grabbed him and Chokeslammed him. Batista rolled to the outside with Show following him to continue working on him. Suddenly, John Cena came hobbling out from backstage to the ramp with a referee trying to hold him back from heading to the ring. Cena was visibly still injured, but Show noticed him and started up the ramp towards him. As the ref continued the countout, Batista had rolled back into the ring. Show realized the count was at 8-9 and tried to run back to slide into the ring. Show failed to get in the ring before 10, and the ref awarded Batista the victory.

As Big Show looked out of the ring at Cena who was smirking up on the ramp, Batista had got back up and ran over to Spear Big Show down, then rolled out of the ring. Raw ended with an angry Big Show glaring out of the ring and yelling at Cena who was on the ramp.

Winner: Batista wins via countout over Big Show to become the #1 Contender against Randy Orton at Judgement Day.

Looking Back at Backlash

So the Backlash PPV arrived super fast after Wrestlemania, and it seemed like many fans who watched it were disappointed in the matches. Some of the WWE Universe is probably happy to see the titles change up, but it's very surprising that all 3 would change at this Pay-Per-View, versus at Wrestlemania 25. In particular, it seems strange for Cena to win the World Heavyweight Title at WM25, only to drop it weeks later to Edge. Apparently, WWE wants a few things: 1)to keep building up Edge as a supreme champion & 2)Cena going for the WWE title eventually, and he may even be defending it come Summerslam against Batista. For now it looks like we'll have a Big Show and John Cena feud on Raw, once Cena returns from any injuries suffered. How soon that is will be unknown until Raw tonight. It appears like Vickie Guerrero had a hand in sending Big Show out to finish off Cena for Edge, meaning Vickie and Show are still in some sort of collusion.

Also while I'm glad to see Christian rewarded with the ECW title, I'm surprised that Swagger dropped it at this point. It looked to me like Swagger would continue building up his dominance as champion, so that he could either defeat Tommy Dreamer to retire him, or lose to Dreamer for the storyline. Now it looks like what may happen is that Christian will successfully defend against Dreamer to retire him in a "good friends" type match, where they both shake hands and hug at the end. Dreamer will basically be passing the torch on to Christian as the new face of Extreme.

Last night's Backlash also had the inexplicable Kane-CM Punk match part 3, where Kane won via chokeslam. I'm still not sure whether this is just to give these two guys something to do on their new home of Smackdown or what. Maybe they'll be part of a Championship Chase along with a few other guys like Jericho, Jeff Hardy and Undertaker to determine #1 Contender now that Edge is champion. Jeff won the "I Quit" match against Matt in dramatic fashion as he duct taped and rope tied his brother to a table, then prepared to jump on him from a ladder. His brother pleaded for Jeff to think about their parents, and finally said "I Quit", giving Jeff a much needed win. Jericho also defeated Steamboat so he can continue to brag about how he's better than the legends over on Smackdown. Steamboat's still pretty impressive for a man of his age wrestling in the ring, as he displayed better skills than many of the younger wrestlers.

Probably the most predictable win of the night was Orton taking the WWE title in that Six Man Tag match from HHH. This was bound to happen, and it now sets up a potential Batista vs. HHH feud. I'm not sure that Shane McMahon really needs to be part of the equation any longer, but it seems WWE is pushing that angle too. With Orton as champ, it'll be interesting to see who steps up first to challenge him now. MVP really doesn't have much going on since he moved to Raw, and with his impending US Title defense against Dolph Ziggler, I'm expecting he may lose the title, making him a potential first opponent for Orton on Raw.

And then there's Santina, Santino, Khali Kiss Cam, and Beth Phoenix. Last night the antics continued as Beth got leveled by Khali so that Santin-a could take an easy pin and keep her Miss Wrestlemania crown. Jim Ross was even part of the joking as Santina confessed her love for him and Khali challenged her to kiss JR. It's unknown whether JR was even in on the joke, but his colleagues sure had fun ribbing him. This whole Santina-Beth thing will only amuse the fans for so long, until WWE finally decides to have Beth Phoenix pulverize Santino/Santina and take her rightful crown.

Raw Preview 04.27.09

Last night's Backlash Pay-Per-View definitely changed the Raw scene as the WWE fans know it. In the two main event matches, each of the two major titles that were on Raw were up for grabs, and both titles changed hands. First off, Randy Orton's plan finally helped him achieve the WWE Title, when he and his Legacy team effectively outdid Team HHH. Outside the ring, Rhodes and Dibiase managed to handle Shane and Batista, leaving HHH in the ring for Orton. When HHH looked to his pal Batista for the assist, Batista was unable to help, and Orton was able to score the moves to finally beat HHH for his title. After the RKO and a final Punt Kick to HHH's head, Orton has now become WWE Champion, which he stated as the final piece of his master plan for revenge on HHH. The question now becomes who will step up to challenge Orton first? Also, will Batista, Shane and HHH once again have differences amongst them that need to be resolved?

In the other main event match, Edge was able to re-capture the World Heavyweight title from John Cena in a Last Man Standing Match. He and Cena battled each other in a grueling match inside, outside and around the ring, as well as into the crowd and up the ramp. Edge didn't exactly win the match on his own doing though, as a former friend/nemesis showed up to assist. The Big Show came out to once again knock out an opponent, but this time costing Cena the championship. Show chokeslammed the champ through a nearby light, and that was enough to keep Cena down for the ten count. Edge now celebrates as he brings the title back to Smackdown. But the former champion Cena left the arena on a Stretcher with a neckbrace on. With Cena's status in question, it now seems like Big Show is pulverizing just about everyone he comes into contact with, from Rey Mysterio to Undertaker, to now John Cena. Will Big Show explain his motivation for the latest attack on Cena? And will John Cena be present on Raw to confront him, or will he be recovering from the vicious attack?

In a moment of comic relief during Backlash, "Santina" Marella made her highly-anticipated appearance on the Khali Kiss Cam. When Santina arrived to the ring she claimed she couldn't kiss The Great Khali, because she was really in love with someone else. Santina then confessed her undying love for commentator Jim Ross, much to JR's dismay. After Khali asked Santina to kiss JR to prove her love, Beth Phoenix and Rosa Mendes came to the ring to intervene. Beth told them to stop the nonsense and demanded that Santina grant her a chance at her Miss Wrestlemania crown. Unfortunately for Beth, she also made the mistake of insulting the Great Khali, prompting Khali to chop her down just as the bell rang to start the match. Santina took a very quick pin and retained her Miss Wrestlemania crown. Beth Phoenix won't be too happy with the results, but will she take it out on her boyfriend Santino, or the suspicious sister, Santina on Raw?

2009 Backlash PPV Results

2009 WWE Backlash Pay-Per-View results are here! This year's Backlash event featured several compelling matches, including the 3 major titles up for grabs, with John Cena defending the World Heavyweight Title against Edge, Jack Swagger defending his ECW Championship against Christian, and Triple H participating in a Six Man Tag Match where if anyone on his team is pinned, submitted or counted out, then HHH loses his title.

Christian vs. Jack Swagger
ECW Championship

The first official match of the night saw Captain Charisma trying to take the ECW title away from the All-American American. Swagger was dominating Christian early on, but both men displayed great skills on the mat. It seemed each time Christian was on the offense, Swagger quickly regained control again. At one point, Swagger went for the Gutwrench Powerbomb, but Christian countered and DDT'd the champ for a 2 count. Swagger continued to dominate after Christian sent him to the outside. Christian and Swagger fought on the apron, with Swagger eventually able to knock Christian down as he got on the corner ropes. In the ring, the two competitors continued battling, with Christian eventually able to use his finisher the Kill Switch as a counter attack on Swagger. Christian scored the winning pinfall, earning him the ECW Championship!

Winner: Christian wins via pinfall over Jack Swagger to become new ECW Champion.

Ricky "The Dragon" Steamboat vs. Chris Jericho

Ricky Steamboat looked good back in the ring to wrestle his first singles match in 15 years time. At one point, the Dragon was able to run and dive out of the ring onto Jericho. There was some great back and forth action, and the crowd once again was behind the WWE Hall of Famer chanting "You still got it!" One exciting moment in the match saw Jericho and Steamboat battling up on the ring corner, with The Dragon able to hit the Superplex on Jericho. After failed pin attempts by Steamboat, Jericho eventually went for the Walls of Jericho. Steamboat countered it and locked a Figure Four on Jericho, but he was able to grab the ropes to break it. The two men battled out on the apron, with Steamboat getting the better of Jericho by tossing him back inside the ring, then flying off the corner for a bodypress. Despite Steamboat having the crowd behind him, Jericho was able to counter Steamboat's pinfall attempt with the Walls of Jericho to make The Dragon tap out.

Winner: Chris Jericho wins via submission over Ricky "The Dragon" Steamboat.

CM Punk vs. Kane

The Punk-Kane match had plenty of back and forth action with both competitors trading moves and offensive attacks. At one point, Punk hit his Suicide dive onto Kane on the outside. At another point, Kane tossed CM Punk against the steel ringpost outside the ring, then tried for a pin back inside. The match continued with both men getting 2 counts. Punk went for GTS, but Kane countered, so Punk countered to hit a running Bulldog on the Big Red Machine. In the end though, despite Punk countering a chokeslam with kicks to Kane, Kane responded by hitting the Chokeslam anyways. Kane scores the winning pinfall over Mr. Money in the Bank 2009.

Winner: Kane wins via pinfall over CM Punk.

Jeff Hardy vs. Matt Hardy
I Quit Match

Even though they may have been separated by the WWE Draft which brought Matt to Raw, the Hardy brothers took their feud to a new level as they battled in a grueling "I Quit" match. Early on, it was Jeff in control as he smashed Matt's head into the turnbuckle, threw him into a guard rail outside the ring and jumped at him from off the steel steps. Back in the ring, Jeff continued his attack, eventually putting a sleeper on his brother. Matt tossed him off, and was able to knock Jeff to the outside. Back in the ring, Matt locked on a Figure Four to wear his brother down by submission. The brothers exchanged submission holds, and both refused to quit when asked by the referee. At another point in the intense matchup, Jeff connected on a Twist of Fate on his brother, followed by a Swanton Bomb off the top rope. Jeff hit a second Swanton, but Matt still refused to quit.

Eventually, a table was brought into play in the match as well as duct tape, which Jeff used to duct tape Matt Hardy's legs and hands together. Jeff then grabbed a rope and tied Matt down to the table, then set up a ladder in the ring. Jeff climbed the ladder and was ready to dive off onto Matt on the table, but Matt started talking to his brother on the mic. Matt tried to convince Jeff to stop saying their parents wouldn't approve of all this. Eventually, Matt told Jeff he quit, so that Jeff wouldn't jump on him from the ladder. Jeff picks up a much needed victory over his brother, and then after the match jumps onto Matt anyways.

Winner: Jeff Hardy wins the I Quit match over Matt Hardy.

Santina Marella on Khali Kiss Cam

As Santina came to the ring for the Khali Kiss Cam she revealed to Great Khali that she truly was in love with commentator Jim Ross. Khali's translator Singh said Khali had no idea but totally understands, but wanted proof of Santina's love. Singh said Khali asked Santina to prove her love for JR by kissing him. JR refused to kiss Santina and was taunted by his fellow commentators. Eventually, Rosa Mendes and Beth Phoenix arrived down to the ring. Beth challenged Santina right there for the Miss Wrestlemania crown, and insulted Great Khali in the process. Khali took exception and knocked Beth down to the mat. The bell promptly rang allowing Santina to cover the already knocked out Beth Phoenix.

Santina Marella wins via pinfall over Beth Phoenix to retain Miss Wrestlemania crown.

Randy Orton, Cody Rhodes & Ted Dibiase vs. Triple H, Shane McMahon & Batista
WWE Title Six Man Tag Match

With the WWE Title on the line, Shane McMahon was being dominated by Legacy in the ring as they tried to keep him away from Batista and HHH. Shane eventually broke away and was able to tag in Triple H who had serious momentum as Randy Orton also tagged in. Triple H was able to hit a Facebuster on Orton, and eventually a Spinebuster for the attempted pinfall. Ted Dibiase rushed in to make the save. Batista also got involved and ended up going to the outside against Legacy. Meanwhile in the ring The Game continued going after Orton while on the outside, Rhodes knocked out Shane McMahon with a steel chair. Next Batista was hit by the chair. Triple H tried to get a chair from Batista to use on Orton, but to no avail. Orton was able to RKO The Game, and then delivered a vicious Punt kick to seal his victory, becoming the new WWE Champion.

Winner: Randy Orton wins by pinfall over Triple H to become new WWE Champion.

Edge vs. John Cena
World Heavyweight Title
Last Man Standing match

With Cena's World Heavyweight Championship on the line, a Last Man Standing Match would determine who would be the champion after Backlash. Both Cena and Edge sacrificed their bodies in this one, using the steel steps against one another. At one point, Cena made Edge tap out in the STF, but the match had to be won by the ref counting one man down for 10. Edge was able to counter the Attitude Adjustment with a Spear, and the ref began to count both men down again.

The match continued as things eventually spilled to the outside, with Cena able to hit the Attitude Adjustment on Edge into the crowd. Edge still managed to get up at 9 to Cena's surprise. Things continued on the arena stairs, with Cena hitting a running Bulldog. They eventually got to the ramp where Edge DDT'd Cena down, then smashed a chair on him several times. Despite all that, Cena managed to answer the ref count by 9. Edge went for a Spear to finish Cena off, but Cena countered and went for the Attitude Adjustment. Suddenly, the Big Show arrived out to interfere in the match. Show grabbed Cena and chokeslammed him through a nearby light, causing it to explode. Cena was counted down for 10, making Edge the new World Heavyweight Champion.

Afterwards, John Cena was taken out by stretcher with a neckbrace on.

Winner: Edge wins the Last Man Standing match over John Cena to become new World Heavyweight Champion.

2009 Backlash Predictions

The 2009 Backlash Pay-Per-View seems to have arrived at us faster than a Rey Mysterio 619. It's not long after Wrestlemania 25 and the recent WWE Draft, leaving just a few weeks leading to this event. With all that going on, WWE really had to scramble once again to try to build some hype for the various matches, one of which was recently added (CM Punk vs. Kane). Three titles are on the line here, with only one being defended under traditional rules (ECW Title). Cena's World Heavyweight title goes on the line against Edge in a Last Man Standing match, while Triple H's WWE Title is on the line in a Six Man Tag match against Team Orton. The Hardy brothers pick up their feud with an "I Quit" Match, and to give some possible comic relief, Santina Marella is scheduled to pucker up for Great Khali's Kiss Cam. The big questions that come with this PPV are will WWE look to move one of the major titles back to Smackdown, and will CM Punk be cashing in his MITB contract? Let's see...

Here's thoughts and predictions for this year's Backlash PPV...

Ricky "The Dragon" Steamboat vs. Chris Jericho

It's tough to recall another WWE superstar who was inducted into the Hall of Fame then returned to the ring to resume his wrestling career afterwards, but Steamboat seems to be the man achieving that benchmark. Seeing as Chris Jericho was recently drafted to Smackdown, I don't see a loss here jeopardizing his stature or rise on the new show. Steamboat will amaze the fans once again as he continues what seems to be a glory tour on the heels of his entry to the Hall of Fame.

Prediction: The Dragon emerged victorious with an entertaining showing for the fans.

CM Punk vs. Kane

This match continues to baffle me; it seems strange that it was added into the mix late, because there really isn't a feud going on or any real reason for this one. CM Punk won the MITB by knocking Kane off the ladder, but it's not like Kane's been calling Punk out on the mic or in interviews. The more I look at it, the more it seems like something might go down with Punk's MITB opportunity at Backlash. This match may have been added as a diversion, to have Punk get beat, then allow him to cash in his MITB when fans least expect it later on. Punk will defeat Kane yet again here, because he needs to build up credibility on his rise to the top again.

Prediction: CM Punk wins another one against Kane.

Jeff Hardy vs. Matt Hardy
I Quit Match

Jeff Hardy needs a win pretty badly lately, unless WWE is going the route of Matt Hardy seeming to dominate his younger brother over and over. There's been recent talks and rumors that Jeff wants away from WWE (he's not accepting contract offers), and if that's true, then this may be one way to send him off. Remember back several years ago to when Chavo Guerrero did this sort of thing to Rey Mysterio, giving Rey time off for surgery and rehab. Chavo continually hammered away on Rey's knee as Mysterio was hanging upside down from a metal scaffolding, and Rey finally screamed "I Quit" in pain. In this scenario, I'd like to think Jeff's sticking with the WWE Universe, but it's looking like Matt will continue with the momentum of beating up on his younger brother in and around the ring.

Prediction: Matt Hardy punishes Jeff even more, forcing him to yell "I Quit".

Christian vs. Jack Swagger
ECW Championship

Christian's got the fan support and he's been on the rise, but Swagger defeated him in a great title contest once before. Another thing to remember is the upcoming contract ending for ECW legend Tommy Dreamer. Dreamer has vowed to win the ECW title again before his contract is set to expire, or he retires. It would seem like Jack Swagger needs to be the guy holding the title for Dreamer to defeat, the classic underdog pulling off the upset win against the cocky champion. So while it'd be nice to see Christian as champion, there's really only a month left for Swagger to hold the title, before losing it or retiring Dreamer.

Prediction: Jack Swagger defeats Christian to stay ECW Champion.

Edge vs. John Cena
World Heavyweight Title
Last Man Standing match

Here's where things get really interesting. You've got to believe that WWE is looking to either unify the two major titles, or move one back to Smackdown. If the latter is true, then this match could be how it's done. Fans were shocked weeks ago during the draft because HHH was brought to Raw, but Cena wasn't moved to Smackdown. So at Backlash, Edge will once again find some sort of opportunity to win here. Cena and Edge have put on some memorable matches, and exchanged titles several times, so it's nothing shocking, unless that MITB comes into play. I also won't be surprised if this is where CM Punk decides to cash in since both men are going to be pretty beaten up. Punk could give us a case of Deja Vu and cash in on Edge once again, raining on the Rated-R Superstar's parade. It seems quite unlikely for Cena to retain here, unless Punk's going to somehow steal away the WWE title.

Prediction: Edge defeats Cena and becomes new World Heavyweight Champion.

Randy Orton, Cody Rhodes & Ted Dibiase vs. Triple H, Shane McMahon & Batista
WWE Title Six Man Tag Match

This match seems like less of a buildup of the Orton-Triple H feud that Triple H handled at Wrestlemania 25, and more of a buildup of a future Triple H vs. Batista feud. This match could easily go two ways; one would have Batista winning the match, setting up claims that he helped save Triple H's WWE Title. The other more likely route will be that Batista and HHH get involved into some sort of argument or rift that leads to Team Orton winning the title for Randy. Either way, it seems a Batista vs. HHH feud is inevitable now, and that will lead to Cena challenging for Orton's WWE title.

Winners: Team Orton wins it somehow due to Batista and Triple H getting involved in a dispute. Shane is middleman but it won't matter, as Orton wins the WWE Title.

Smackdown Recap 04.24.09

SmackDown recap from London, England:

After the opening pyrotechnics display, Jim Ross and Todd Grisham welcome fans to Smackdown and announce two matches scheduled for tonight: Big Show vs. Undertaker, and Batista/Shane McMahon versus Cody Rhodes & Ted Dibiase of Legacy.

Edge came to the ring to discuss his upcoming World Heavyweight Title match against John Cena at Backlash. The Rated-R Superstar Edge discussed his recent Con Chairto followed by a 10 count on a knocked out John Cena on Raw. Edge told the WWE Universe he might admire Cena if he didn't hate him so much, and promised to be the Last Man Standing at Backlash.

Highlights were shown of Matt Hardy's various assaults and attacks on his brother Jeff.

CM Punk & Jeff Hardy vs. Matt Hardy & Kane

CM Punk worked well with Jeff as the tag partners took the fight at Kane, knocking him to the mat several times. Kane made a comeback and was able to dish out some punishment as well. At one point, the Hardy's began to fight in the ring, with each brother having the advantage at different points. CM Punk dove through the ropes onto Kane as things got more frantic. Towards the end when Jeff knocked heads with Kane, it allowed Matt to roll up his brother for the pinfall victory.

Winner: Matt Hardy & Kane win via pinfall over CM Punk & Jeff Hardy.

Undertaker vs. Big Show

Undertaker was able to attack Big Show throughout, but Show continued to pummel the Deadman. As the match went on, Undertaker gained momentum and went for Old School off the ropes. Show countered it with one knockout punch, then a second to the back of Undertaker's head. The referee eventually called for the match to stop since Undertaker couldn't continue. After the Big Show had been celebrating his win, Taker was back on his feet ready to fight more. The Deadman connected on a punch to Show sending him out of the ring.

Winner: The Big Show wins due to the referee's decision, stopping the match as Undertaker was unable to continue.

Gail Kim vs. Maryse
WWE Divas Championship

Last week Gail Kim was able to defeat Maryse, albeit a non-title matchup. On tonight's show Gail again went for victory but this time with Maryse's Divas championship up for grabs. In the match, Gail tried to use her high flying skills and attacks but the Divas champ was ready for her. Maryse punished Gail with her favorite submission hold, similar to the Boston Crab. In the end, Maryse used her French Kiss finisher to slam Gail down and pin her, retaining the Divas title.

Winner: Maryse wins via pinfall over Gail Kim to retain the WWE Divas Championship.

MVP vs. Chavo Guerrero

Chavo Guerrero looked to earn back the respect of his family name as he faced another former Smackdown star, MVP. In this match, Chavo used technical skills on the mat to keep MVP down, trying to wear him down in various holds. Unfortunately, Chavo was no match for the US Champ, who was able to hit the Playmaker on Chavo to score the pinfall victory.

MVP's victory celebration was shortlived as Dolph Ziggler showed up on the ramp. Ziggler cockily challenged MVP to a US title match next week and claimed he'll take the title then. MVP accepted and held up his belt reminding Dolph who the champ is.

Winner: MVP wins via pinfall over Chavo Guerrero.

Shane McMahon & Batista vs. Cody Rhodes & Ted Dibiase

2/3 of each team for this Sunday's Backlash Six Man Tag, squared off on Smackdown. Batista and Shane seemed to be on the same page for this one, working together. At one point they performed a double suplex together on Cody Rhodes, and Batista eventually hit a Spinebuster on Rhodes which allowed Shane to score the winning pinfall. Shane and Batista held up their arms together to celebrate the victory heading into Backlash this Sunday.

Winners: Shane McMahon & Batista win via pinfall over Cody Rhodes & Ted Dibiase.

Smackdown Preview 04.23.09

Tonight's episode of Smackdown airs just days ahead of the upcoming, intense Backlash Pay-Per-View. To prepare for one of the event's main matches, Smackdown will host a preview tonight as Shane McMahon and Batista will team up to face the team of Cody Rhodes and Ted Dibiase. Last week on the debut of WWE Superstars, Shane McMahon faced Rhodes one-on-one, with the outcome a disqualification when Shane began using a steel chair on his opponent. Batista was able to defeat Ted Dibiase despite a good showing from Dibiase, with the Batista Bomb. This past week on Raw was a different story, as Shane and Batista got involved in Triple H's No DQ matchup against Randy Orton. Triple H's future Backlash opponents, Rhodes and Dibiase rushed to the ring to interfere, but Shane and Batista weren't far behind to try to help. Unfortunately, Batista was blinded by a move and accidentally speared down Shane McMahon, causing a confrontation between The Animal and Triple H. All of the chaos and confusion resulted in a sneaky win as Randy Orton grabbed Triple H and hit the RKO to pin him. How will Shane and Batista get along during tonight's
match? Will Shane seek retribution against The Animal, or will these two Backlash teammates finally be on the same page?

Several new Smackdown stars will be wrestling at this weekend's Backlash Pay-Per-View, including the newest draftees, CM Punk and Kane. Those two saw a surprise finish to their match as Punk used a counter to roll up Kane for a pinfall. The Big Red Machine was shocked at how the 2009 Money in the Bank winner has now defeated him on two straight occasions. Punk and Kane will meet up once again at Backlash, but they'll also be in action tonight. Who will gain the upperhand between these two new Smackdown wrestlers? Also, Matt Hardy has vowed he will completely destroy his brother Jeff Hardy. The brothers are set to fight in an "I Quit" match this Sunday for Backlash, meaning one brother will need to say the words loud and clear for the WWE Universe to witness. With Backlash coming up, something's got to give between the feuding brothers. What will the two brothers have in store for tonight's episode of Smackdown? Will their feud intensify even more?

Another wrestler who was removed from Smackdown by the draft is United States Champion, Montell Vontavius Porter (MVP). The usually cocky superstar will now call Raw his home, and has brought the US title with him. Despite still carrying the belt, MVP saw a strange loss on Smackdown just a week ago, when Smackdown newcomer Dolph Ziggler was able to roll him up in a pin, grabbing MVP's tights to secure the win. MVP was shocked at the loss which came from the man who may be more cocky and arrogant than Porter. Will Smackdown's newest star continue to go after MVP or will he set his sights on another Smackdown superstar?

WWE Superstars Recap 04.23.09

Tonight marked the second episode of the newest WWE television show, WWE Superstars on WGN America. It featured three matches taking place in London, England, including Edge versus Kofi Kingston, and Hornswoggle's possible final tag match with his father as he leaves for Raw. Here's the recaps and results from the 4/23/09 episode of WWE Superstars...

Finlay & Hornswoggle vs. Tyson Kidd and Natalya

Hornswoggle may have wrestled as his father's tag team partner for the last time. In tonight's encounter the father-son duo took on ECW's Natalya and Tyson Kidd in a tag team match. Hornswoggle used all sorts of antics including juggling to distract and irritate Kidd and Natalya. In the end it was Hornswoggle connecting on a Tadpole Frogsplash off the corner to win it. Finlay then had the crowd help him give Hornswoggle a song to send him off to his new show, Raw.

Winners: Finlay & Hornswoggle win via pinfall over Tyson Kidd & Natalya.

Rey Mysterio & CM Punk vs. Kane & Big Show

In this matchup, CM Punk prepared for Kane at Backlash, while Rey was out to try to gain revenge against Big Show who knocked him out on Raw. In the match, Punk and Rey worked well together as they delivered a doubleteam on Kane to take him down. Rey hit several moves including a hurricanrana outside the ring on Kane. Kane and Big Show also worked for some time to keep Rey from tagging Punk. Punk finally got involved but in the end his future Backlash opponent Kane, was able to score the pinfall.

Winners: Kane & Big Show win by pinfall over CM Punk & Rey Mysterio.

Kofi Kingston vs. Edge

In this matchup, Kofi Kingston tried to use his quickness and high-flying moves to try to defeat the Rated-R Superstar. Edge was mentally preparing himself for this Sunday's match with John Cena. Kingston delivered on several high risks moves including a bodypress on Edge off the ropes as well as a high dropkick to knock him to the mat. Edge regained control of the match and eventually took out his frustrations by hitting a huge Spear on Kingston taking him down to pin him.

Winner: Edge wins by pinfall over Kofi Kingston.

2009 Backlash PPV Matches - Updated

The WWE's Backlash Pay-Per-View for 2009 will air on Sunday, April 26th, 2009 live from Providence, Rhode Island. It includes several titles on the line, including the WWE Championship which will be contested in an interesting manner. Current champ Triple H will team up with Shane McMahon and Batista in a 3 on 3 tag match against Randy Orton, Cody Rhodes & Ted Dibiase of Legacy. In the Six man tag match, if any member of Triple H's team is pinned, submits or counted out, then the WWE title will be awarded to Randy Orton.

The World Heavyweight Title worn by John Cena will also be on the line in a Last Man Standing match against former champion, Edge. The Rated-R Superstar has been separated from his wife Vickie Guerrero, who is now the General manager of Raw, but Vickie was still able to schedule this match. It seems to favor the ultimate opportunist who always finds ways to gain victory in a sneaky manner.

Also on the card, the Hardy brothers will continue their feud in an I Quit match, WWE Hall of Famer Ricky the Dragon Steamboat battles Chris Jericho, and just recently added, Smackdown stars CM Punk and Kane will meet in the ring. It definitely has the making of an interesting Pay-Per-View!

ECW Recap from London, England:

Josh Matthews and Matt Striker announced that tonight will be the ECW Championship contract signing between Jack Swagger and Christian. Hornswoggle and Finlay came to the ring to kick off the show. Finlay took the mic and held Hornswoggle by his side. Finlay discussed Hornswoggle being drafted to Raw, so tonight will be hist last night on ECW. Finlay handed the mic to Hornswoggle and he excitedly said "I wanna wrestle!" Finlay requested for ECW interim GM Tiffany to put Hornswoggle in a match tonight. Just then, Natalya and Tyson Kidd came out to interrupt.

Tyson Kidd began taunting and joking about Hornswoggle having to leave. Finlay told Kidd that Hornswoggle's a leprechaun, but Kidd's the midget. Natalya began to brag about how Tyson will be the best Hart ever, even surpassing Bret Hart, and told Hornswoggle to run along with his dad. Hornswoggle took exception, ran over and bit Natalya on the backside, causing her to roll out of the ring. Kidd escaped too, and Natalya took the mic, screaming at Hornswoggle that he can have his farewell match against her, tonight.

Hornswoggle vs. Natalya

The match was officially set up by interim ECW GM Tiffany. As the match started, Natalya began to taunt him by putting up her hands for a strength test but out of Horney's reach. Natalya slapped Hornswoggle around a few times, prompting him to run around her and bite her on the backside again. Tyson Kidd jumped onto the apron to try to interfere, but Finlay ran over and swiped his leg, causing Kidd to hit the floor. Natalya shoved Hornswoggle to the mat, then ducked out through the ropes to check on Kidd. Hornswoggle rushed over and rolled up Natalya in a surprise winning pinfall.

Winner: Hornswoggle wins via pinfall over Natalya.

Backstage, ECW interim GM Tiffany was going over paperwork with someone when Natalya and Tyson Kidd showed up. Natalya started to complain to Tiffany about what Hornswoggle did to her in the ring and said she deserves more respect. Tiffany told them both to calm down and show her some respect. Kidd and Natalya asked for Hornswoggle to be fired, but instead Tiffany put Natalya & Kidd in a match against Hornswoggle & Finlay on WWE Superstars this Thursday, then told them to leave so she could go over a contract signing.

Josh Matthews and Matt Striker introduced the Raw Rebound which covered last night's Triple H vs. Randy Orton No DQ match. It ended with Legacy, Shane McMahon and Batista getting involved. Batista accidentally speared Shane, Triple H confronted Batista over it, but Batista shoved him away to go after Rhodes. Orton stole the win by grabbing HHH for a RKO.

Striker and Matthews discussed the various Backlash matches including Christian vs. ECW Champ Jack Swagger and Cena vs. Edge in a Last Man Standing Match.

Evan Bourne vs. Paul Burchill

Burchill came to the ring accompanied by Katie Lea. Bourne gained control early but as he went to the corner ropes, Katie Lea got on the apron for the distraction. Burchill grabbed him and tossed Bourne to the mat, then took over with power moves. Burchill kept Bourne grounded as he used a shortarm clothesline and then a chinlock on the mat. Burchill knocked Bourne to the corner then ran and delivered two knees into his chest. Burchill continued, using an overhead suplex and a knee drop on Bourne on the mat.

Burchill had Bourne in a headlock on the mat, but Bourne got to the bottom rope. Burchill quickly pulled him away and kept the headlock on. Bourne finally was able to stand up and punch Burchill's midsection to break free. Off the ropes, Bourne kicked Burchill hard several times, then delivered a high kick to knock him down. Bourne ducked a Burchill clothesline to kick Burchill to the outside. As Burchill came back in, Bourne ducked his clothesline then tried for an interesting pinfall opportunity. The match continued with plenty of back and forth action, and Bourne going for the Shooting Starpress, but Burchill got up to punch Bourne on the corner. Paul put Bourne in the Electric Chair, but Bourne used his skills to flip down and toss Burchill with his legs. Bourne finished him off with the Shooting Starpress.

Winner: Evan Bourne wins via pinfall over Paul Burchill.

A promo was shown for Vladimir Kozlov, kicking, punching, and breaking objects during his training. Kozlov talked about how he dominates everywhere and is looking for the ECW Championship next.

Frankie Sloan vs. Vladimir Kozlov

Kozlov was booked for another squash match on ECW, against London's own, Frankie Sloan. Before the match could start, Kozlov took a mic and began speaking in Russian while the crowd booed. Kozlov then said Russian athletes are superior and will achieve total domination.

Kozlov beat on his lighter opponent early on and delivered a huge boot to knock him to the mat. Vladimir made quick work of the opponent. Kozlov picked up Sloan with one arm and delivered a forceful slam to the mat for the pinfall victory.

Winner: Vladimir Kozlov wins via pinfall over Frankie Sloan.

ECW Title Match Contract Signing

ECW interim General Manager Tiffany was in the ring and introduced the challenger, Christian first. Christian came out to the roar of the crowd, dressed in street clothes. Next, Tiffany introduced the current ECW Champion, Jack Swagger. Swagger came out all smiles carrying the ECW title on his shoulder and dressed in a gray suit. Swagger and Christian continued in a staredown even though Tiffany asked them to sit. Finally they took their seats, still exchanging glares.

Tiffany told both men to sign off on the match, and that they could make any comments they wanted. Christian went first, signed the contract and slid it over to Swagger still looking at him. Swagger picked up the mic asking Christian where his one liners and wise cracks were, and asked if he had nothing to say. Swagger put the mic down and signed off on it next. Tiffany looked over the contract and nodded, then Swagger started to insult Christian and brag about his success now. Swagger said he's at the top now and achieved success while Christian was out of WWE. Swagger said he can tell just by looking at Christian that Christian realizes Swagger is faster, stronger and better than he is. Swagger told him "you can't beat me", and Christian kept glaring at him.

As Swagger, stood up to leave, Christian finally picked up the mic. Christian said he could make fun of Swagger's suit, haircut and speech impediment but it doesn't mean anything to do all that. Christian said this time Swagger can focus on running his mouth and being "bigger, better and stronger". Christian said he'll focus on this Sunday and Backlash, and making him an ex-ECW Champion. Tiffany thanked both men and left the ring. Swagger showed his ECW belt to Christian, then threw it right at him. Christian got up off the mat, and went at Swagger, with Swagger able to get the upperhand. Swagger delivered a Powerbomb on Christian through the table they signed the contract on. ECW ended with Swagger holding up his title smiling.

Raw Revelations: No DQ ends with RKO

Last night's Raw offered some intriguing matchups featuring the two major champions both getting the Raw deal. Both men ended up layed out by their future Backlash opponents, with Edge sneaking in to get the best of Cena and Orton able to sneakily steal a victory with the RKO when Triple H was out of it. Legacy had Orton's back, while Shane and Batista didn't seem to have each other's backs. In fact, it looks like Batista and Triple H might be where we're heading next, with Orton possibly winning the WWE title, and those two fighting over the #1 Contender's spot. As for Cena, the whole time he was layed out, I kept waiting for CM Punk to emerge with the briefcase to win the title right before Backlash, once again screwing Edge out of it. But this didn't come to realization and Cena will keep the title heading into the PPV. As for Punk, his victory over Kane was good to see, in fact it might be the start of his push and possible heel turn.

There's been some wrestling bloggers disgruntled over how Raw wrestlers who were drafted to Smackdown are still on Raw and guys drafted from Smackdown are still on Smackdown and so forth. It's not a huge deal unless it keeps up for weeks, which it doesn't appear it will. The best way to view it may be similar to NBA trades, or even other pro sports where you don't see the guys on your team right away but know you will soon. The more I think about the way the 2009 WWE Draft went, it makes Raw extremely heavy with the top stars, while Smackdown seemed to lose a lot. Smackdown's title picture really just looks like Edge, Jericho, Jeff Hardy, Kane and Undertaker. As we know Undertaker is iffy in terms of when he can wrestle or not, and lately his title reigns have been shortlived. Kane has been lost in the shuffle in terms of a major title push and matches. Jeff Hardy, Jericho and CM Punk seem like the most likely choices for championship material on Smackdown. Raw on the other hand has the four biggest stars on its roster with Triple H, Batista, John Cena and Randy Orton. Toss in Big Show as well and Raw really has the more powerful contenders overall. It almost makes you wonder if one of them, maybe Cena or Triple H are heading off for a movie role, surgery or some time off. Same goes for the strange in-ring scenario where Big Show KO'd Mysterio and he was still on the mat for some time, is this a sign of time off for Mysterio, or will they be involved in some inter-brand feud?

Last night's Santino-Santina skit with the Titantron was definitely funny as Santino was trying to convince everyone his sister was a different person, but the replayed message on the screen kept going off at inopportune times or sped up when Santina was talking. Khali will get his opportunity to plant a kiss on Santina this coming Sunday at Backlash. Also, it looks like the Rosa-Beth feud everyone was anticipating is getting off to a start as Mendes was partly responsible for Beth losing the title match. It'll be great to see Rosa finally start wrestling, and possibly getting involved in the Divas title picture.

As for Ricky Steamboat, it's nice to see him getting his time in the spotlight again. We found out last night it'll be him and Jericho one-on-one at Backlash. I've seen Steamboat since his WWF days including his feuds with Macho Man, and have no problem with his return. It seems as if the WWE also is really banking on Ricky's recent popularity with the fans chanting and getting behind him, and there's nothing wrong with that at all. The question is how much steam does Steamboat have left to keep doing these matches?

Raw Recap 04.20.09

Raw Recap from London, England:

Michael Cole and Jerry Lawler welcomed fans to London, England and reminded everyone of tonight's No DQ match between Triple H and Randy Orton. Lillian Garcia introduced Chris Jericho who arrived out to the ring in a business suit. Lawler and Michael Cole promoted "The Wrestler" DVD starring Mickey Rourke which is on sale Tuesday.

Jericho discussed how he felt isolated amongst all the parasites and liars of WWE Raw. Jericho said he feels much better now that he's been drafted to Smackdown, since tonight will be his last appearance ever for Raw. Jericho said without him on Raw things won't be so good, and fans will be begging for his return 6 months later, but he won't do it. Jericho said he was done and prepared to leave the ring, but just then Ricky "The Dragon" Steamboat arrived out to confront him.

Steamboat told Jericho he was wrong and that during Wrestlemania weekend the fans showed him plenty of appreciation. Steamboat thanked Jericho for bringing back a feeling he hasn't felt in some time; the passion to perform. The Dragon said if not for Jericho, he'd never have been at Wrestlemania or back on Raw. Jericho began accusing Steamboat of trying to bask in the spotlight one more time. Jericho said both Steamboat and the fans are delusional. Jericho challenged Steamboat to a one-on-one match for Backlash. Before Steamboat could accept, John Cena's music hit and the champ arrived to the ring.

Jericho told Cena he's done with him and Raw, so he doesn't care what he has to say. Jericho said his last act on Raw will be a walkout on Cena. Jericho exited the ring to fans chanting "Na Na Na Na, Hey Hey, Good-bye". As Jericho was halfway up the ramp, Steamboat told him he accepted. Jericho smirked as he started to walk again. Cena stopped him and said he wasn't there to defend Steamboat, but instead to tell Jericho that he'll be wrestling tonight, against Cena.

Michael Cole said Rey Mysterio's final appearance tonight will be one-on-one with Big Show.

Chavo Guerrero was in the ring to let fans know he'd officially been drafted to Raw. Chavo thanked Vickie the new GM of Raw, and said he would prove to her he can push around anyone on the Raw roster. Just then, Batista's music hit and The Animal arrived onto the ramp as the crowd went wild.

After the bell rang the two men stared at each other from across the ring. Chavo charged at Batista full force, but met a boot which leveled him. Batista picked up Chavo quickly and hit the Batista Bomb, then scored the winning pinfall.

Winner: Batista wins via pinfall over Chavo Guerrero.

As Batista was heading up the ramp, Chavo got on the mic and began apologizing to his Aunt Vickie for the loss, saying he wasn't ready. Chavo tried to pull himself up by the ropes, as Batista headed back to the ring. Chavo got up and saw Batista there, then told him he was ready. Batista wasn't having it and grabbed Chavo for another Batista Bomb.

Backstage, Shane walked up to Batista to congratulate him on the victory. Batista began saying last week things got out of control. Shane said he wanted to make sure they're on the same page for Backlash. The two had a brief exchange about last week's incident where Batista shoved Shane, and Shane dropkicked him out of the ring.

CM Punk vs. Kane

Highlights were shown of Kane nearly winning Wrestlemania's MITB match, but CM Punk knocked him off the ladder and grabbed the briefcase. Both of these competitors have now been drafted onto Smackdown. Early on Punk did a Springboard jump off the side ropes at Kane, who caught him with an uppercut. Kane continued the punishment on Punk with a dropkick and headlock. Punk began kicking back and went for the Bulldog, but Kane shoved him away. Punk went for GTS but Kane avoided it and booted him down. Kane prepared for a Chokeslam and grabbed Punk around the throat, but Punk countered it into a rollup pinfall.

Winner: CM Punk wins via pinfall over Kane.

Santino Marella came down to the ring to discuss how he lost to Khali last week, so his sister will have to kiss Khali on the Kiss Cam for Smackdown. Santino said he wanted to call out his sister Santina to apologize for losing. Santino waited for several moments but Santina wasn't coming out. Her music came on and then Santina appeared on the Titantron. Santino and she began to have a fake exchange, with the taped version eventually speeding up on him. During the promo, Santina tried to say she had a blister on her mouth which would prevent her from having to kiss Khali on Smackdown. Beth Phoenix came to the ring with Rosa Mendes and told Santino she spoke with GM Vickie Guerrero. Vickie said she'd set aside time at Backlash for the Khali Kiss Cam so Santina could still kiss Khali. Santino was angered over this and told Beth she better hope she wins back her Womens title tonight. Melina came down to the ring for the match.

Melina vs. Beth Phoenix
WWE Womens Championship

With the match underway, Beth grabbed Melina onto her shoulder and powerslammed her to the mat. Beth grabbed Melina up in a Torture Rack type move on her shoulders, with Melina eventually elbowing out. Beth rammed Melina into the corner and then bent her leg back to kick Melina in the head with her own foot.

Melina turned the match back around in her favor. Rosa Mendes got up on the apron to yell at Melina. Melina came over to get in her face and Beth tried to charge at Melina. Melina moved out of the way and Beth rammed into Rosa knocking her off the apron. The distraction allowed Melina to do a Sunset Flip type slam/pin move to defeat Beth and retain her title.

Winner: Melina wins via pinfall over Beth Phoenix to retain the WWE Women's Championship.

Triple H was shown preparing in the locker room. Shane McMahon came in to shake hands and wish HHH good luck. Shane reminded HHH they need to be careful at Backlash because if HHH loses his cool and gets counted out or DQ'd, then he loses the title to Orton. Triple H told Shane it won't be a problem because he'll get all his anger out tonight.

Chris Jericho was shown walking backstage ready for his match against Cena.

As Raw returned Michael Cole and Jerry Lawler discussed the upcoming Backlash PPV in Providence, Rhode Island, with Cena versus Edge in a Last Man Standing Match.

John Cena vs. Chris Jericho

Early on Jericho started on Cena in the corner kicking him and punching him. Jericho slammed Cena back, then started taunting him. After knocking Cena down off the ropes, Jericho kicked him in the midsection and kept up the taunting. Cena tried to mount a comeback, but Jericho stayed in control, again knocking him down.

At one point the crowd really got into it as Cena and Jericho exchanged punch after punch. Cena hit the Five Knuckle Shuffle and went for the Attitude Adjustment. Jericho countered it to DDT Cena to the mat, but failed at the pinfall. Cena got onto the apron at one moment, and Jericho tried to jump off the corner at him. Cena caught him on his shoulders, but Jericho elbowed out then jumped with Cena from the apron, smashing Cena into the steps. Both men were layed out outside the ring as Raw went to commercial.

When Raw returned Jericho again had regained control in the ring. Jericho went for Walls of Jericho but Cena countered to flip him away with his legs. Cena again tried to hoist Jericho up, but this time from the corner. Jericho got him into the Electric Chair and slammed Cena back. Cena went for he Lionsault off the ropes but missed. Again Cena got Jericho up and was going for the Attitude Adjustment, but Jericho flipped off, then hit the Codebreaker. Jericho had a near fall, and the match continued. Jericho was able to lock in the Walls of Jericho eventually, causing Cena excruciating pain. Cena was able to counter it and flip Jericho off of the hold. Cena locked on the STF but Jericho pulled his way to the ropes. Cena stood up to pull him back, but Jericho got up and hit a spin kick to Cena's head.

Cena and Jericho got up on the corner with Cena trying for a suplex. Jericho kept trying to fight out. Suddenly, Edge rushed to the ring and got on the apron, then shoved both men. Jericho went flying off to the outside, and Cena fell to the mat. From there, Edge beat on Cena and eventually Speared him down. With Cena KO'd, Edge went to the outside and retrieved two chairs, then positioned one under Cena's head. Edge delivered the Con-Chairto, and then did a promo for the Last Man Standing match, counting to 10 to show how he'd beat Cena for the title.

Winner: Match interrupted by Edge's interference. DQ win for Cena.

Footage was shown from during the break from the aftermath of Edge's attack on Cena. Several referees had to help Cena from the ring and up the ramp.

Rey Mysterio vs. Big Show

Highlights were shown from the Jeff Hardy vs Big Show match on Smackdown. Jeff was making a strong comeback but his brother Matt came to the ring and attacked, preventing a win.

Early on, Big Show completely manhandled his smaller opponent, leveling Mysterio then lifting him to the corner for a hard chest slap. Mysterio fell to the outside with Show smirking in the ring. Rey got into the ring and began using his quickness. Rey was able to hit a 619 and kick Big Show in the spine. Again, Rey used his speed and knocked Show into the ropes. Rey quickly went for the 619, but Show caught his legs. Big Show walked over with Rey in his grasp, then delivered a nasty knockout punch on Rey. With Rey KO'd on the mat, Show took the winning pinfall.

After Show's win, Rey remained on the mat with the referees checking on him. Cole and Lawler looked over highlights.

Winner: Big Show wins via pinfall over Rey Mysterio.

WWE Slam of the Week showed highlights from Shane McMahon versus Cody Rhodes on WWE Superstars last Thursday. Shane was DQ'd for bashing a steel chair on Rhodes. With the match over, Shane went Coast to Coast to kick a trash can into Rhodes in the corner.

Cole and Lawler reviewed Batista's victory over Ted Dibiase on Smackdown. Dibiase was shown in the locker room as Rhodes asked him how his back was. Rhodes and Dibiase discussed their Backlash match, but Dibiase started to make a point that their leader needs to be a champion. Orton came in just then to interrupt and talked about why they will be the winning team at Backlash. Orton also guaranteed that he'd beat Triple H tonight.

Triple H vs. Randy Orton
No DQ Match

The two future Backlash opponents met in a Wrestlemania rematch. Early on, Triple H began his venting as he took Randy Orton to the mat and continued to pummel him. HHH knocked Orton to the outside, but as he went out, Orton gained the upperhand. Triple H turned things around as he whipped Orton into the crowd barrier. HHH ripped the cover of the commentators' table and began punching Orton on top of it. Orton counted by smashing HHH's head into the table. Orton brought a trash can over to go at HHH, but HHH kicked him. The two countered each other back and forth, and eventually took things back into the ring.

Triple H made a comeback with a high knee to Orton off the ropes and eventually clotheslined Orton to the outside. Orton stumbled around and grabbed a trash can, then hid by the side apron. HHH came over to grab him and Orton smashed the trash can into his skull, causing HHH to hit the mat. Raw went to commercial break.

Raw returned with Orton in control as he whipped HHH into the steel steps. With HHH back in the ring, Orton grabbed the steel steps and brought them in to smash into HHH's head. HHH barely got his arm out as Orton tried to pin him for 3. Orton continued trying to destroy Triple H, and set him up for a DDT onto some steel steps outside the ring. HHH managed to counter it and slammed Orton's back onto the steps. Back in the ring, HHH regained control and punched away at Orton, then drove Orton's face into his knee.

The Game tried to put Orton away with a steel chair, but Orton countered him and DDT'd HHH into the chair. Orton stumbled to the corner and prepared for the Punt kick. HHH avoided it and then ran over to clip Orton's leg. HHH then got to the outside and smashed Orton's leg against the ringpost. HHH followed with a huge chair shot to Orton's leg. Triple H got back in the ring to eventually slap a Figure Four leglock on Orton. Orton withstood it and got to the ropes to break things up.

As Triple H continued trying to destroy Orton, he used a steel chair to put around Orton's ankle. All of a sudden, Legacy rushed to the ring to attack HHH. Shane rushed down next to try to make a save, but he was soon overpowered. Then, Batista rushed down to try to help. Batista seemed to clear the ring, but at one point he became blinded. Batista went for a spear on Cody Rhodes but instead got Shane McMahon. Triple H saw it and confronted Batista. Batista told him it was an accident, then shoved HHH to the side as Ted Dibiase came at them. Batista knocked Dibiase out of the way. As the melee continued, Shane and Batista both were knocked outside with Rhodes and Dibiase. Orton capitalized on the distractions and hit an RKO on HHH to win it.

Winner: Randy Orton wins via pinfall over Triple H.

Raw Preview 04.20.09

Just a week ago, the 2009 WWE Draft added and subtracted many superstars on the WWE Raw roster. Notably, WWE Womens Champion Melina, Intercontinental Champ Rey Mysterio, Kane and Chris Jericho were all drafted over to Smackdown where they will now appear on Friday nights. All was not lost though, as Raw has gained plenty of new members for its roster including US Champion MVP, Divas Champion Maryse and the WWE Champion, Triple H. For weeks now, Triple H has been involved in a bitter feud with Randy Orton and Legacy, which will lead up to another match at the Backlash PPV. That match will see Orton and Legacy team up to face Batista, Shane McMahon and Triple H in a WWE Championship six man tag match. If any member of Legacy pins anyone on HHH's team, Triple H officially loses his WWE title. Before that goes down, The Game and the Legend Killer are scheduled to face one another in a "No DQ" match on tonight's Raw. These two wrestlers have had some grueling matches and encounters in the past, but how will they fare in tonight's contest? Will Legacy, Batista or Shane McMahon become involved?

The WWE Raw roster has added several interesting new wrestlers via this past week's regular and supplemental draft. The Miz and MVP were both drafted to Raw from Smackdown and ECW respectively, possibly boosting their status under the spotlight on Monday nights. Also amongst the Raw locker rooms will be the unified tag team champions, The Colons, as well as the beautiful twin WWE divas, The Bella Twins. Also joining them will be the smallest competitor amongst them all; Hornswoggle. Hornswoggle was officially separated from his father Finlay, who is still an active member on ECW. With these new names in the mix on Raw, what will be in store for them next? Will someone else adopt Hornswoggle? Will a new tag team step up to challenge The Colons?

On last week's show, John Cena had an entertaining and exciting battle against the ECW Champion Jack Swagger. Even though no titles were on the line, both men put on a championship caliber matchup, with Cena able to make Swagger eventually tap out for the victory. Cena's win scored another draft pick for Raw, and that pick was of course, Triple H. As Cena was shocked staring down at Triple H on the ramp, the Rated-R Superstar, Edge, decided to sneak into the ring for the attack. Cena was able to turn things around, but the World Heavyweight Champion will need to gain focus on tonight's show, as he'll be defending his title against Edge at Backlash. Will Edge decided to make another appearance, or will Vickie Guerrero have a special match in store for Cena prior to Backlash?

Jeff Hardy vs. Big Show

Early on in this one former Smackdown member The Big Show really punished Jeff with an array of forceful moves including headbutts, stomping and choking. Jeff managed to gain a burst of momentum as he hit a Whisper in the Wind. From there Jeff kept on attacking, but his chance at victory was interrupted when his brother Matt charged to the ring in street clothes. Jeff forced Matt off the apron then crashed out of the ring on top of him. Unfortunately as Jeff got back into the ring, the distraction gave Big Show the advantage as he knocked out Hardy and pinned him.

Winner: Big Show wins via pinfall over Jeff Hardy.

A video preview higlighting tonight's matches between Triple H and Randy Orton and Ted Dibiase vs. Batista is shown.

Great Khali and his manager Singh came to the ring for another edition of Khali's Kiss Cam. Before choosing a female audience member to kiss, Khali announced his excitement over next week's kiss: Santina Marella. Then, Khali chose a pretty brunette woman out of the audience and after a twirl in the ring planted a Khali kiss on her.

Gail Kim vs. Maryse

Gail Kim and former Smackdown diva Maryse had a knock-down-drag-out divas fight. In the ring, the cocky French-Canadia divas champion Maryse showed Gail several moves including her Boston Crab style submission. Gail was able to escape it and build momentum, eventually delivering a swift kick to Maryse. Gail Kim picked up the win by pinfall in this non-title matchup.

Winner: Gail Kim wins via pinfall over Maryse.

R-Truth vs. John Morrison

A newcomer to the Smackdown roster, John Morrison, battled fan favorite R-Truth. Both men traded offensive control, with Truth able to battle back against the former ECW champ Morrison. Truth got Morrison to the corner to punch on him but Morrison countered to slam Truth down. Morrison used his finisher The Moonlight Drive to ultimately finish off Truth.

Winner: John Morrison wins via pinfall over R-Truth.

Triple H and Randy Orton were scheduled to have a "Face Off" in the ring on Smackdown. HHH arrived to the ring to crowd cheers, but as he awaited Orton, the Legend Killer didn't show. Finally, Orton appeared on the Titantron and announced he wouldn't be there tonight. Orton continued to taunt the Game, but soon the last laugh was HHH's when he informed Orton they'd be having a "No DQ Match" on Monday Night Raw.

GM Teddy Long announced that the Matt Hardy vs. Jeff Hardy match at Backlash will now be an "I Quit" match.

Undertaker vs. Shelton Benjamin

The 17-0 undefeated Undertaker made his return on Smackdown in a match against former US Champion, Shelton Benjamin. In the match, Shelton tried to target Taker's head and neck throughout applying several submission holds. Taker used his class moves including Old School and the Chokeslam. In the end, Undertaker was too much for the Gold Standard as he finished him off with the Tombstone Piledriver.

Winner: The Undertaker wins via pinfall over Shelton Benjamin.

New Smackdown member Dolph Ziggler showed up on Smackdown and tried to introduce himself to MVP and GM Theodore Long. Both men ignored Ziggler so he left. Teddy wished MVP good luck on WWE Raw and said he wanted to introduce him to his friend Sherry from "The View" talk show.

MVP vs. Dolph Ziggler

Two equally cocky superstars met in this match, with former Smackdown star MVP getting bested by newcomer to the roster, Dolph Ziggler. Ziggler seemed to dominate this match quite a bit, looking quite comfortable with his new home on Friday nights. Once MVP finally seemed to be turning the match in his favor, Ziggler countered his move for a rollup pin. Ziggler held onto MVP's tights without the ref noticing to secure the pin.

Winner: Dolph Ziggler wins via pinfall over MVP.

Batista vs. Ted Dibiase

These two wrestlers will be a part of the big six man tag team match at Backlash PPV. Early on, Ted DiBiase gained the advantage by injuring Batista's knee and going to work to exploit the injury. However, the tactic was not enough to stop the power of The Animal. Batista exploded using his powerful offense including a Spear to Dibiase and the finisher "The Batista Bomb" to capture the victory.

Winner: Batista wins via pinfall over Ted Dibiase.

WWE Superstars Recap 04.16.09

Thursday night marked the premiere episode of the new weekly WWE TV show, "WWE Superstars". Three matches were on the debut episode's card, including Matt Hardy vs. The Undertaker and the final match of the ECW Elimination Chase which saw Finlay versus Christian. Here's the results from WWE Superstars:

Shane McMahon vs. Cody Rhodes

Two opponents from the upcoming Backlash PPV's Six Man Tag match faced off in one of Superstars' first matches. Both men had control of the match back and forth, with Shane using his legs to squeeze Rhodes on the mat at one point. Rhodes made a comeback beating up McMahon and stomping on him outside the ring. At another instance, the referee warned Cody for trying to use a steel chair in the match. Shane McMahon grabbed the chair and ended up using it, disqualifying himself. After this he completed the Coast to Coast, jumping off the corner and delivering a dropkick to Rhodes in the opposite corner, also using the trashcan.

Winner: Cody Rhodes wins due to disqualification over Shane McMahon.

Christian vs. Finlay
ECW Elimination Chase Finals

Hornswoggle who was recently drafted to Raw, accompanied Finlay to the ring. This match came after Finlay and Christian survived two other matches; a Fatal Fourway and this past week's Triple Threat match. This finals match was a grueling one, but in the end the ring skills of Christian prevailed as he pinned Finlay. After the bell, Finlay and Christian shook hands after a great battle.

Winner: Christian wins via pinfall over Finlay to earn a title shot against Jack Swagger at Backlash.

The Undertaker vs. Matt Hardy

In their first ever match, The Undertaker was completely in control against Hardy. Matt left the ring at one point to grab a steel chair, but then decided to get himself counted out. As Matt continued up the ramp, he was attacked by Jeff Hardy. Matt rushed back into the ring to escape, but there he was met by The Deadman and his vicious Chokeslam.

Winner: The Undertaker wins due to countout of Matt Hardy.

Josh Matthews and Matt Striker welcomed fans to the arena, and reminded everyone of the ECW Championship Chase match for tonight, a Triple Threat between Christian, Finlay and Tommy Dreamer. John Morrison made his way out for the opening match. Highlights were shown of how Morrison interfered in The Miz' match against Kofi Kingston on last night's Raw, resulting in Raw getting a draft pick, and The Miz being selected. Morrison offered Miz a handshake and hug, but then Miz turned on him and slammed Morrison to the mat.

Evan Bourne vs. John Morrison

Morrison faced off in singles action for his first time since the breakup of he and The Miz during last night's WWE Draft. This was a back and forth matchup that saw both men control the momentum at times with all sorts of maneuvers. There were plenty of headlocks, knees, shoulder blocks and submission holds. In one instance, Bourne fell onto the side apron and as he tried to pull himself up with the bottom rope, Morrison ran over and kneed him off the apron. At another point in the ring, Morrison went to run against the ropes, but Bourne ran over and bodypressed onto him, causing both men to spill outside the ring. After a failed pinfall in the ring, Bourne began to repeatedly kick away at Morrison's chest to knock him onto the mat.

As Bourne had things in control he pulled Morrison towards the corner, then climbed the top turnbuckle for the Shooting Starpress. Morrison quickly got up, charged over and delivered a roundhouse kick to Bourne's head, causing Bourne to fall and hang down in the corner. Morrison went over, grabbed Bourne and completed the Moonlight Drive from the corner, then took the winning pinfall.

Winner: John Morrison wins via pinfall over Evan Bourne.

David Floridia vs. Vladimir Kozlov

Kozlov easily dominated in his debut match on the ECW roster. From the start, Kozlov assaulted Floridia in the corner with punches, chops and kicks. Floridia tried to jump off the corner at one point, but Kozlov just batted him down from the air with both hands. Kozlov threw Floridia over his back across the ring, then did continuous chest bumps before doing a one hand slam to pin Floridia.

After the win, Kozlov picked up a mic and delivered a warning to the ECW superstars, partly in Russian and partly in English.

Winner: Vladimir Kozlov wins via pinfall over David Floridia.

Backstage, Hornswoggle and Finlay were shown preparing for the next matchup.

Striker and Matthews reminded fans that the WWE Supplemental Draft starts tomorrow at 12noon EST on WWE.com.

Backstage, Paul Burchill and Katie Lea discussed the supplemental draft with ECW GM Tiffany. Burchill and Katie Lea were concerned about being separated by the draft. Tiffany said everyone's eligible for the supplemental draft so they'll need to log onto WWE.com to see if they were drafted. Jack Swagger entered the office as Burchill and his sister left. Swagger suggested to Tiffany that he have an exclusive interview on the new Superstars show Thursday night. Tiffany said she already decided to have the finalist in the ECW Championship Chase on, but encouraged Swagger to keep bringing the ideas. Before he left, Tiffany told him she was impressed by his match last night, smiling as Swagger left.

Finlay vs. Christian vs. Tommy Dreamer
Triple Threat ECW Championship Chase match

The 3 finalists for #1 contender for ECW title faced off in a Triple Threat match, with the losing wrestler being eliminated from the Chase, while the 2 surviving wrestlers will go on to a singles match for the #1 contender spot. The winner of the match goes against Jack Swagger for the ECW title at Backlash.

Finlay gained control against Tommy Dreamer for some time in the ring while Christian had been knocked to the outside. At one point, Christian quickly climbed to the apron after Dreamer slammed Finlay. Christian tried to jump at Dreamer who ducked it then slammed Christian face first onto Finlay on the mat. Finlay continued with momentum as he tried to suplex Christian off the corner, but Tommy Dreamer came over to knock Finlay down and suplex Christian himself.

With Finlay hanging upside down in the corner, Dreamer ran over and dropkicked him. Finlay came right back and knocked Dreamer to the outside then went over to Christian who was down on the mat. Christian had been playing possum and tried to roll up Finlay for the pinfall. From there the action got wild, as each wrestler tried a variety of moves. Christian got tangled up in the ropes as Dreamer worked against Finlay. Finlay countered Dreamer's move and hit the Celtic Cross on him as Christian was stuck in the ropes and could only watch the pinfall happen. With Dreamer eliminated, Finlay and Christian began giving each other looks in the ring.

Winner: Finlay wins the Triple Threat match by pinfall over Tommy Dreamer. Dreamer is eliminated from the ECW Championship Chase, while Finlay and Christian will go on to fight for the ECW Title #1 Contender spot.

Raw Revelations: #1 Draft Pick is a MVP

Last night's Raw featuring the 2009 WWE draft was a lengthy one, complete with some entertaining interbrand matches between various stars we don't usually see tangle in the ring. It was also full of some moves many fans from the WWE Universe claimed they saw coming a mile away. In particular, Triple H was moved back to live TV on Monday nights. Three draft picks in particular look like they will receive a major push and storyline with their new brands: MVP to Raw, CM Punk to Smackdown and Vladimir Kozlov to ECW.

With the #1 draft pick, WWE Raw got its brand a true "MVP". That's right, Montell Vontavius Porter will now make Raw his home on Monday Nights. It's a smart move in general because his character is the cocky, sports star type who now has the US Championship, is the highest paid star in WWE (kayfabe) and also can state he was a #1 draft pick. Big Thangs just may be poppin' for the MVP, perhaps a run at one of the major titles now? First he'll need to drop the US title to someone, and strangely his former foe Matt Hardy was also drafted to the Raw brand. A new feud could be brewing with those two, now with them on opposite sides (face, heel).

CM Punk was brought to Raw in last year's draft and now he'll head to Smackdown as the #7 pick, and also the 2009 Money in the Bank winner. Someone on Twitter suggested a possible heel turn for CM Punk and that very well could be. It would have to come at the expense of John Cena at Backlash, or later on against someone like Jeff Hardy on Smackdown. These would be opportunities for a heel turn and briefcase cash in. Or of course we could see deja vu, with Punk once again cashing in and robbing the title from Edge. No matter what, Smackdown will now give Punk a new home to shine on.

It was nice to see Vladimir Kozlov going to ECW, as I had suggested that move in the Draft preview would make some sense. Kozlov was on a major win streak and part of the title chase on Smackdown until he hit a roadbump the past few months, and was basically derailed from a match at Wrestlemania 25. Now ECW has Kozlov and most likely he'll be a part of the ECW title picture. If Tommy Dreamer or Christian win the title, Kozlov makes a great new dominant heel to battle them. Swagger could always turn face, but not for now. Speaking of that, the Swagger versus Cena match on Raw was definitely an entertaining one and a good indication that Swagger is ready to battle with the big boys. It's too bad Swagger wasn't moved to Raw or Smackdown where he could truly shine, but that could be in the works.

Many fans were also anticipating that as Triple H got drafted to Raw, it would mean that John Cena would be the #12 pick and head to Smackdown, moving the World Heavyweight title back over. Apparently, the plan was foiled or they will have to wait for this Wednesday's Supplemental draft to see if it comes true. There's been interesting speculations already though, with several fans postulating theories that Cena is bound to lose the title to Edge at Backlash, and CM Punk may make his first big heel turn.

Other moves included The Miz getting broken away from Morrison, who basically was the reason Miz got drafted (due to the DQ in Miz's match against Kingston). Miz promptly planted Morrison into the mat and announced he was ready to move on. Rey Mysterio and Chris Jericho both moved to Smackdown along with Kane, recreating the title picture over there. You can now see that Kane, Jericho, Punk, Hardy, Edge will all be part of the chase for whatever title is up for grabs there. What I find interesting is that Vickie Guerrero and Edge have been broken apart, but again that may change in the Supplemental draft. Vickie proudly announced "her husband Edge" was participating in a rematch vs. Cena at Backlash, but now she is reunited with Big Show on Raw, so will we see a new power couple form?

It was a sad #3 draft pick as Melina was moved to Smackdown with the Women's Title, but that move was soothed in exchange for another lovely WWE diva. Now viewers and fans of Raw (and those who don't get to see Smackdown on TV) will see the French-Canadian WWE Diva Maryse bring her Divas championship and other assets to Monday nights. Oui, the WWE Universe approves...Bonjour Maryse!

Over at the fun social media site Twitter, @wwecharacters provided live updates of the WWE's 2009 Draft while also checking out what the WWE Universe was saying. Fans had plenty to say regarding each of the picks and a few "non-picks". Some were even sending updates live from the Raw audience (such as "Edge was 4 feet from me" or discussing that they saw Cena mouth the words "So you're staying?" to Triple H).
