WWE's Top 10 Stories in 2008

wwe year in review 2008

Looking back at the past year, the WWE was definitely more full of surprising moments than ever before, making it an exciting year to be a pro-wrestling fan. Despite the economic downturn, fans continued to attend shows, purchase Pay-Per-Views and WWE merchandise, showing that the brand of sports entertainment continues to thrive. What was great about 2008? While WWE found itself in controversy as it always does, it was definitely less devastating than anything seen in 2007. WWE was able to rise to the occasion with some great stories of intrigue, surprise and triumph in 2008.

While there were several seemingly devastating injuries at the time this past year - John Cena, Randy Orton and Edge, there were also some surprise returns as well. A few names from the past also made their way back into the wrestling ring including Goldust, Honky Tonk Man, Roddy Piper and D. Lo Brown. Stone Cold Steve Austin returned at Cyber Sunday as a Guest referee, and Mr. Kennedy made his move into the acting world with an upcoming DVD movie for 2009. The General Manager position on Raw was constantly changing names while the GM's of ECW & Smackdown stayed consistent.

Here's a look back at the top 10 WWE stories and incidents of 2008.

#10 McMahon's Millions

mcmahon's millions 2008

While it may be considered somewhat of a flop by the WWE, and the fans who didn't win, millions of fans registered to win Mr. McMahon's money on Raw. The catch was you had to be watching and prepared to give a special code, or answer a trivia question. The other catch? You didn't necessarily win a ton of money. Some fans were left with just $12 or $200 while others won up to several hundred thousand. The contest lasted for about a month or so on Raw, and ended with the collapse of the WWE set onto Mr. McMahon. Wrestlers rushed over to assist the chairman, who was taken away via stretcher, and hasn't been heard from since. Stephanie and Shane stepped in, asking fans to respect the family's wishes that Mr. McMahon's health not be discussed at this point.

#9 ECW Superstar Initiative

ecw superstar initiative evan bourne 2008

With Theodore Long's taking over as GM on ECW, good things started to happen for the 1 hour long show. Not only did he add a beautiful new assistant in WWE Diva Tiffany (Taryn Terrell), but he also introduced a superstar initiative. The concept was to test out new wrestlers on ECW to see who has what it takes to be a part of the Extreme brand. Some of the names we are now very familiar with include: Evan Bourne, Jack Swagger and Ricky Ortiz. Expect these superstars to continue making a name for themselves in 2009, with title aspirations possibly leading to title reigns.

#8 Return of the Slammys

slammy awards 2008 wwe

It had been a long hiatus for the fun-filled award show known as "The Slammys". Previously, superstars such as Shawn Michaels, The Rock and Bret "the Hitman" Hart won awards, but this year saw a new set of superstars taking statues. Miz and Morrison won best Tag Team, Beth Phoenix was top diva, Edge & Vickie were top couple, and 2008 Superstar of the Year was Chris Jericho. Shawn Michaels and Flair won the award for best match of 2008, with Flair's final match at WM24. The special 3 hour Raw was a fun show full of entertaining moments such as a Khali kiss with diva Mickie James complete with Jillian Hall's awful singing and the backup dancers of Rajin Singh, Hacksaw Jim Duggan, The Fink, and Kung Fu Naki. Oh & don't forget Ron Simmons....DAMN!

#6 Regal's Rule in 2008

william regal 2008 king intercontinental champion

While it was a bad year for our #5 individual, it was perhaps fittingly a "regal" year for William Regal. Earlier in the year, Regal won the 2008 King of the Ring tournament, beating the likes of CM Punk. From there, the 2008 King became the General Manager of Raw, a tyrant who abused the fans. Regal had the lights cut out on matches, ordered matches to be stopped and threatened to have fans thrown out. All this resulted in an eventual match with Mr. Kennedy, in which the loser had to leave Raw. Regal was dismissed from Raw for some time (due to a Wellness policy violation) but upon his return, he managed to defeat Santino Marella to capture the Intercontinental Title. Regal also picked up a "Queen" in the process, as WWE Diva Layla became Regal's gal pal and sidekick. Heading towards 2009, Regal will look to build on that success, but will have a tough challenge when he defends his title against CM Punk.

#5 Adamle is Raw, Briefly

wwe mike adamle 2008 raw gm

It was a tough year for Mike Adamle, a former commentator for NFL programming. He originally started out as a sideline reporter on Raw introducing matches for Raw or upcoming Pay-Per-Views. Next, WWE put its faith in him as a commentator, moving him to ECW alongside Tazz. Unfortunately, Adamle tried to put his own cool spin on the commentating, but didn't know wrestling enough to call the matches. Superstar names, moves and information was botched and butchered. In all fairness to Adamle, he received a surprise promotion to General Manager of the Raw program. WWE really had faith in this guy, but for some reason Adamle was forced to resign, just a week after slapping Randy Orton in the face. Will we see or hear from Adamle in the WWE again? Only time will tell...

#4 Year of the Champions?

wwe champions 2008 titles belts

2008 saw plenty of World Heavyweight championship reigns, both short and long. It seemed every name on the upper eschelon of the WWE's rosters had the WH title at some time. Undertaker captured the title at Wrestlemania 24 by defeating Edge to keep his undefeated streak going. Then it was Edge getting the title back after his lover Vickie Guerrero stripped Undertaker of the title and had him banished from WWE. CM Punk had a surprise reign and memorable moment on Raw when he cashed in Money in the Bank after Edge was Powerbombed in the ring by Batista. Punk wore the World Heavyweight Title, but only briefly as he was sidelined for the big Championship Scramble match thanks to Randy Orton. Chris Jericho became the successor as champ, and wore the title twice in 2008. Batista also had his turn with the title, but for a very brief reign as he was champ in between Jericho's 2 wins. John Cena made his triumphant return from a neck injury to defeat Jericho at Survivor Series and is the current champ. Got all that?

And for honorable mention let's not forget the ECW title which currently is worn by Matt Hardy. During the past year, Mark Henry had an impressive ECW title reign as did the Big Red Machine Kane and Chavo Guerrero. Add to all this the new WWE Divas Championship created exclusively for Smackdown, currently owned by Miss Michelle McCool. Will 2009 see more champions, or longer, more stable title reigns?

#3 Cena's Rumble Return

wwe john cena royal rumble 2008In the WWE surprise of the year, the secret was kept so under wraps that even Cena's fellow wrestlers had no idea he was returning to action. WWE did a great job of thwarting any attempts of internet gossipers or rumor mills and allowed for a truly surprising moment in wrestling history. Cena made his surprise return from injury earlier than expected, as the #30 entrant into the Royal Rumble. Not only did he return, Cena won the Rumble and moved into the #1 Contender spot for Randy Orton's WWE Title. Definitely one of the great moments for WWE fans who were surprised at the return of the current posterchild for pro wrestling.

#2 Jeff Hardy WWE Champion

jeff hardy wwe champ 2008

WWE fans are well aware of the long, rocky road that superstar Jeff Hardy has traveled. He's been walking on a thin line with the WWE due to 2 drug suspensions, and never seemed likely to wear the WWE belt. He had worn the Intercontinental title for some time in 2008. The enigmatic fan favorite was kept out of Wrestlemania 24 due to one suspension. Add to that Jeff's house tragically burning down and the loss of his favorite dog in the fire. Even more, Jeff found himself as part of WWE controversy yet again, as WWE ran a fake story that Jeff was attacked in his hotel room prior to Survivor Series 2008. The story was allegedly covered by TMZ and CNN, according to WWE. Jeff was unable to compete at Survivor Series for the title, but at Armageddon the stage was set. In a Triple Threat match, Jeff managed to hit the Swanton heard round the world, crashing down onto Edge, pinning the champ and becoming the new WWE Champion!

#1 Ric Flair Retires

ric flair retires 2008 wwe

The Nature Boy will always hold a spot in the hearts and minds of pro-wrestling fans. He's had a career spanning several decades with an impressive resume of title wins in WCW, WWF & WWE. There had been murmurs behind the scenes for some time that Flair wasn't pleased at his role with the company and was considering leaving. A new story developed whereby Chairman McMahon ordered a stipulation: each match Flair fought in would put his career on the line. Flair pulled off wins against superstars including Randy Orton, Umaga, William Regal and Triple H en route to one of his biggest matches yet. At Wrestlemania 24, Flair battled his longtime friend Shawn Michaels in a Career Threatening Match. Michaels and Flair put on a great show, but in the end the Hall of Famer lost to Michaels via a Superkick. Flair delivered an emotional farewell at the Hall of Fame Ceremony the night before, and Raw the next night featured a salute to Flair, with wrestlers past and present coming to the ring to pay tribute to the legend. Flair made a few other appearances on Raw before he decided to puruse other endeavors.

Raw Recap 11.03.08

Raw Recap from Tampa, FL:

Tonight's Raw was the 800th celebration episode of Monday Night Raw. Raw opened with highlights from some of its 800 episodes in its 16 year run. Raw is the longest running weekly TV show in history. The Raw TV program has outlasted hit shows like ER, Mash, The Simpsons and Seinfeld. Michael Cole and Jerry Lawler opened things up discussing the big tag match between Miz/Morrison and DX, as well as the Steel Cage match for the World Heavyweight title. Lawler said there will be a first tonight, a 16-diva tag team match.

Randy Orton came down to the ring to open the show. Orton discussed the ultimatum he gave to Shane & Stephanie McMahon last week, that either they fire Mike Adamle as GM, or Orton walks. Orton said he's not leaving until the McMahon's come out to address the issue. Orton left the ring and sat in a steel chair at ringside.

The Hardys vs. MVP & The Brian Kendrick

Michael Cole discussed the bitter rivalry earlier this year between Orton and Hardy. Highlights were shown where Jeff did a Swanton off the scaffolding down onto Orton to close out an episode of Raw. Both men left the arena on stretchers.

As the match moved towards its finish, it was Matt Hardy against MVP. MVP was worn down and jumped to tag Kendrick. The ref was busy keeping Jeff Hardy out of the ring and didn't see Kendrick tag in. Kendrick began arguing with the ref, and then his bodyguard Ezekiel got up on the apron to argue as well. As the two were arguing, Matt delivered a Twist of Fate on MVP. Jeff climbed to the turnbuckle and jumped off for a Swanton Bomb onto MVP. Matt covered MVP. Jeff quickly rolled out of the ring, and as the ref turned he jumped down to the mat to count the pinfall.

Winners: The Hardys win by pinfall over MVP & The Brian Kendrick.

A montage of various highlights was shown from the first episode of Raw back in 1993 at Madison Square Garden. Included in the footage were superstars such as Bobby "the Brain" Heenan, Shawn Michaels, Doink the Clown, Max Moon and Yokozuna.

Raw returned with highlights from the Razor Ramon vs. 1-2-3 Kid match on Raw back in 1993 (Episode #17). Kid did a reverse flip off the turnbuckle to crash down onto Razor and took the pin for a surprise victory.

8 Man Battle Royal

Included in the competitors: Cryme Tyme, Dibiase & Rhodes, Manu, Jamie Noble, William Regal and Snitsky. The winner of this match would receive an Intercontinental championship match next week on Raw. Current champ, Santino Marella, arrived down to the ring prior to the match along with his girl Beth Phoenix. Santino and Beth joined the commentators to watch the match.

Early on Team Priceless was able to dump Snitsky over the top rope. Ted Dibiase then pushed Manu and Rhodes over to eliminate them. Next up, Noble went at William Regal near the ropes. Noble fell over the ropes but went onto the apron, then dropped onto the floor with his feet. Noble yanked Regal to the outside to begin beating him up, but the refs separated them and told Noble to head backstage.

It came down to just Cryme Tyme versus Ted Dibiase. Dibiase was able to avoid their double team, then dumped JTG over the top rope as he charged at him. Dibiase and Shad started to fight, with Shad overpowering Dibiase. Shad tried for the running slam with Dibiase on his shoulder. Dibiase slid off Shad's shoulder and shoved him. Shad tried for a huge boot, with Dibiase avoiding it and shoving him into the ropes. Dibiase then hit a huge dropkick to knock Shad out of the ring. Dibiase thought he was the winner, but Regal was still legal. Regal came charging out of nowhere and shoved Dibiase over the top rope to take the win.

Winner: William Regal wins the 8 Man Battle Royal to become #1 Contender for Intercontinental title on next week's Raw.

A limo pulled up in the arena garage. The chaffeur opened the door and out stepped Shane and Stephanie McMahon. The two began walking and Stephanie told Shane he should handle this on his own, since he knows what to do. Shane said it's not how he planned to celebrate Raw's 800th, but headed on his way to the arena.

Raw returned to show footage from Episode #409 in 2001. Vince McMahon was discussing how he will own the contract for WCW at Wrestlemania, and will bury the organization. Just then, Shane came up on the Titantron from Panama City, live on WCW's Monday Nitro. Shane informed his dad that he now owned WCW as he had bought the company.

Orton got back into the ring to address the issue of Mike Adamle and how he put his health in jeopardy. Orton again demanded that either Adamle goes or he goes. Shane McMahon came down to the ring to talk to Orton. Shane told Orton he doesn't respond to threats and ultimatums well. Orton told Shane that his father would fire Adamle by now. Shane was about to start addressing the issue when Mike Adamle arrived to the ring to interrupt.

Adamle told Shane that every GM of Raw seemed to have an agenda, but he wanted to try to stay neutral. Adamle said the job of Raw GM corrupts individuals and he doesn't want it to happen to him. Adamle made the announcement as of this moment he is resigning as General Manager of Raw. Adamle shook Shane's hand and left the ring, walking up the ramp. Orton got on the mic and yelled to Adamle that he owes him an apology for last week. Shane said Orton is the one who owes the apology. Shane went on to say he spoke to Orton's doctors and he was medically cleared to compete. Shane told Orton he will therefore compete later tonight against CM Punk.

Footage of episode #778 was shown which included prerecorded videos from presidential candidates John McCain & Barack Obama.

Bret the Hitman Haas vs. Vladimir Kozlov

Haas came to the ring to Bret Hart's entrance song wearing full Hitman gear. Prior to the match, Haas got on the mic to tell Kozlov "the fans didn't screw Vladimir Kozlov, Vladimir Kozlov screwed Kozlov".

In a very quick match, Haas had very little offense if any. Kozlov shoved Haas against the ropes then did a hip toss. Kozlov shoved Haas to the ropes then used a battering ram type move to knock Haas down to the mat.

Winner: Vladimir Kozlov wins by pinfall over Bret the Hitman Haas.

Raw returned to show a replay of Batista defeating Chris Jericho for the World Heavyweight title at Cyber Sunday. Last week, Jericho invoked his rematch clause to set up tonight's Steel cage match.

Backstage, Todd Grisham interviewed Batista asking about his level of confidence tonight. Batista said it took him a long time to win the title back and he's not about to lose it tonight. Batista said at the end of the night, Jericho's still going home empty-handed.

Episode #258 of Raw from 1998 was shown, where D-Generation X members HHH, Chyna, Roaddog, Billy Gunn and X-Pac invaded the enemy lines of WCW. DX rode a miniature tank around and HHH yelled out at the WCW fans in line using a megaphone.

Shawn Michaels and Triple H were shown backstage in DX gear heading out to the ring.

D-Generation X vs. The Miz & John Morrison

Prior to the match, Michaels and HHH forgot they had pyrotechnics as they took to the mics. As HHH was delivering the classic "Are you ready?" line, HBK said he wasn't ready. HBK had footage rolled on the Titantron of Miz and Morrison's mocking of DX last week on ECW. Shawn Michaels pointed out how big HHH's nose has gotten according to the footage. HHH said it's the camera because it puts on 10 pounds. Michaels then said nobody mocks his chaps, that's crossing the line. HHH brought up how Miz and Morrison were still in high school DX started revolutionizing the wrestling industry. HHH had several geeky B&W pictures of Miz and Morrison shown from high school.

During the match, Miz and Morrison continually tried to mock DX arrogantly. At one point, HBK was knocked to the outside, leaving HHH alone to fight Miz & Morrison. Morrison did a mock version of HBK's Sweet Chin Music to kick HHH down to the mat. He tagged in Miz and the two did the DX crotch chops as they stood over HHH. Miz slapped HHH in he head, then set him up for a Pedigree. HHH was able to counter and flipped Miz over his back to the mat. Morrison rushed in to try to knock HHH down, but HHH ducked and Michaels was back on the apron to pull the rope down. Morrison fell out of the ring to the floor. In the ring, HBK entered and delivered Sweet Chin Music to Miz. A stunned Miz, turned and was kicked in the gut by HHH, then Pedigreed to the mat.

Winners: D-Generation X wins by pinfall over The Miz & John Morrison.

Backstage, JBL and Shane McMahon were watching Raw on a TV set. JBL proposed a business proposition to change as Mike Adamle had left Raw leaderless. JBL suggested he should be the new GM of the show. Shane said he'd consider it, but then said he felt a man of JBL's stature needs to be in a high profile match. JBL suggested he be in the Steel Cage match for the title. Shane said instead he'd have JBL facing The Undertaker.

Footage was shown from Episode #243 in 1998, involving the Stone Cold Steve Austin confrontation in the ring with Mike Tyson. Austin gave Tyson the double middle fingers causing the two to explode into a brawl. WWE refs and officials held the two apart as Vince McMahon yelled at Austin.

Mickie James, Candice Michelle, Maria, Kelly Kelly, Michelle McCool, Brie Bella, Eve Torres, Tiffany and Mae Young vs. Lena Yada, Layla, Katie Lea, Jillian Hall, Natalya, Victoria, Maryse & Beth Phoenix
16-Diva Tag Match

Kelly Kelly started off against Beth Phoenix and was able to gain the upperhand. Kelly went over for a tag and Mae Young demanded to be tagged in. Mae came in and began to knock down the various heel divas as they each tried to get into the ring. All the divas started to get involved, and things moved outside the ring. Mae Young was looking out in the confusion and Beth Phoenix, still the legal diva, was able to steal a pin by rolling Mae up near the ropes.

Winners: The heel divas win by pinfall over the face divas.

Footage was shown from Episode #202 of Raw in 2002. Hollywood Hulk Hogan was in the ring causing a stir, when The Rock came down to the ring to interrupt. The Rock challenged Hogan to a headlining match for Wrestlemania and the two shared a classic staredown in the ring.

CM Punk vs. Randy Orton

Footage was shown from Unforgiven where Randy Orton delivered the punt kick to Punk's head, costing him the World Heavyweight title. Tonight's match saw Punk out for revenge.

In the match, Punk gained the advantage on Orton as he sent him to the corner. Punk hit a running knee into Orton's face, then went for a bulldog, but Orton shoved him off causing Punk to hit the mat. Orton got down and waited for Punk to get up for the RKO. Out of nowhere, Ted Dibiase came charging into the ring and ran over to clothesline down Punk. Orton became enraged and saw Manu and Rhodes on the apron, then started screaming at them for interfering. Orton ran over with his Punt Kick to Dibiase's head. Dibiase fell over to the mat, and Punk rolled out of the ring. Rhodes and Manu got in the ring to check on Dibiase as the crowd chanted "R-K-O".

Winner: CM Punk wins due to disqualification of Randy Orton when Ted Dibaise interfered in the match.

Raw returned to replay Orton's kick to Dibiase's head in the ring. During the break, Dibiase was taken away on a stretcher by paramedics. Backstage, Manu and Rhodes confronted Randy Orton for what he did to Dibiase. Orton said he was moments away from winning his first match back until Dibiase interfered. Orton said he was trying to kick some sense into their partner, then screamed at Manu and Rhodes to try something right now. Orton got in their faces, but Manu and Rhodes held off. Orton said they were smart and there might be hope yet.

Highlights of Episode #772 of Raw from 2008 were shown involving the Weigh-in between Big Show and Floyd Mayweather Jr. The weigh in ended with Big Show picking up Mayweather and tossing him out of the ring onto various WWE wrestlers.

Backstage, Stephanie McMahon was confronted by former GM Mike Adamle. Adamle said part of the problem he had being GM was that Stephanie was constantly contradicting everything Shane had told him. Adamle told Stephanie that motherhood hadn't helped her at all. Stephanie angrily told Adamle that controlling Raw is part of her birthright as a McMahon, then wished Adamle good luck. As Adamle left, Shane came in and told Steph he has a major Survivor Series announcement to make. Stephanie asked him to let her in on it, but Shane said to trust him, he'd handle it.

Footage was shown from Episode #475 of Raw in 2002, when Jeff Hardy faced Undertaker in a Ladder match for the WWE Undisputed Championship. Hardy baasehd Undertaker with a steel chair several times and began to climb the ladder. Taker was quickly back up and up the other side of the ladder where he chokeslammed Hardy off, then grabbed the belt hanging above the ring.

Former Raw commentator Jim Ross made his way down the ramp and joined his commentary partner Tazz for the next match.

JBL vs. The Undertaker

Undertaker began to dominate the match and had JBL up on his shoulder for a running slam. JBL escaped it and was able to come off the ropes to knock Undertaker down. The impact caused JBL to fall back and outside the ring. As the ref counted JBL out, all of a sudden Taker sat up Deadman style and gave JBL a look. JBL backed off up the ramp and the ref eventually counted him out. Undertaker stared out at him. Shawn Michaels came running down the ramp and tossed JBL into the ring. Undertaker was able to hit the Tombstone Piledriver to leave JBL layed out on the mat.

Winner: Undertaker wins due to countout of JBL.

Backstage in an office, Chris Jericho was shown pacing. Shane McMahon came into the office and asked Chris what he wanted to talk about. Chris said he heard Shane has a Survivor Series announcement and assumed it's about the World Heavyweight title. Chris said since he'll be the champ after tonight it will involve him. Shane said that the match will be whoever is World Heavyweight champ defending the title against John Cena. Chris said he expects to be champ after tonight and will defend successfully at Survivor Series.

Footage was shown from Raw episode #304, were Stone Cold Steve Austin drove a Budweiser truck down to the ring and hosed down The Rock and Vince McMahon with beer in the ring. Austin climbed on top of the truck to pose as the fans went wild.

The arena was dark and when the lights came on, Kung Fu Naki was in the ring. Fu Naki started doing kung fun moves to his theme music. Hornswoggle appeared from under the ring and then came into the ring to start dancing. Next, the Boogeyman appeared from under the ring and came in the ring, and all 3 men started to dance around. From there, Jesse & Festus, Goldust, Hacksaw Jim Duggan, Lillian Garcia and commentator Michael Cole all got into the ring to dance around to Fu Naki's theme music. Cole danced with Lillian and then Goldust started dancing with him. As the music stopped, Ron Simmons appeared at the top of the ramp. Simmons paused for a while before finally yelling out "DAMN!"

Kofi Kingston & Rey Mysterio vs. Kane & Mark Henry

At a pivotal point in the match, Kingston had Henry in the corner and rammed into his gut. Kingston tried to whip Henry out of the corner, but Henry reversed it to whip Kofi into the corner. Henry rushed at Kofi to try to splash him, but Kofi kicked out of it. Kofi climbed the ropes and tried to jump off at Henry, but Henry caught him in the air. Mysterio came in and tried to help Kofi, but Kane took out Rey. Henry did the World's Strongest Slam on Kofi and then took the winning pinfall.

After the match, Kane tossed Mysterio out through the ropes to the floor. Suddenly, The Great Khali's theme music came on, and Khali walked down the ramp with Runjin Singh. As Kane prepared to chokeslam Rey at the bottom of the ramp, Khali walked over and chopped Kane down. Khali got in the ring and beat Mark Henry up until he fell against the ropes. Rey got back into the ring and saw Henry, then ran across to do a 619. Henry stumbled back and Khali chopped him down. Khali smiled at Rey Mysterio who looked puzzled at what was going on.

Winners: Mark Henry & Kane win by pinfall over Rey Mysterio & Kofi Kingston.

Raw returned with Michael Cole introducing footage of the emergence of John Cena. John Cena's first match was against superstar Kurt Angle. Cena had an impressive debut although it was a loss. Cena's brothers and friends discussed how Cena had always been into hip hop, launching his rapper persona in WWE.

Chris Jericho vs. Batista
World Heavyweight Title Steel Cage Match

At one point, Jericho was crawling out the door and almost reached the floor, but the Animal pulled him back in. Jericho began to attack Batista's left leg where his knee had been hurt. Batista fought back and caught Jericho for a side slam off the ropes. The two continued battling with Batista about to deliver a Spinebuster. Batista's leg gave out and Jericho escaped the move. Jericho went for the Code Breaker, but Batista caught him in the air and tossed him against the cage wall/ropes.

As Jericho used the ropes to get up, Batista ran at him for a Spear. Jericho avoided him and Batista crashed into the cage wall, falling down. Jericho took advantage and quickly climbed up the cage walland over. Jericho came down the other side of the wall near the door, and the Animal smartly opened the door and grabbed Jericho, preventing him from getting to the floor.

The two men continued battling in the ring, eventually going up the cage wall towards the steel cables which lowered the cage down. Jericho pulled a metal piece off the cables and cage and started hitting Batista in the head with it. Batista began to bleed profusely and slumped down in the corner on the turnbuckle as Jericho managed to escape the cage and dropped to the outside, surprisingly re-claiming the World Heavyweight title. Jericho celebrated up the ramp with a sly grin holding up the belt as a bloody Batista still looked out of it in the ring.

Winner: Chirs Jericho wins the Steel Cage match against Batista to become the new World Heavyweight champion.

Raw Preview 11.03.08

Tonight when Raw starts at a special time of 8PM EST, it will be celebrating a true milestone in television. Tonight Raw celebrates 800 episodes, which eclipses the number of episodes by such classic shows as MASH, Friends and The Simpsons. And what better way to celebrate than to have one of the classic matches from WWE history, a steel cage match for the World Heavyweight Championship!

Batista became the new World Heavyweight champ as of Cyber Sunday, defeating Chris Jericho for the title. During that match, there were 3 different guest referees including Shawn Michaels, Randy Orton and Stone Cold Steve Austin. Austin was the final presiding ref as he counted the winning pinfall for the Animal. The next night on Raw an angry Jericho claimed that there was a conspiracy against him, and that GM Mike Adamle, Shawn Michaels & Stone Cold cost him the title. Jericho demanded a rematch, and Mike Adamle took it a step further. To make sure there would be no outside interference, Adamle made the title contest a Steel Cage match. Batista claims he lives for these types of matches, but Y2J always has a trick or two up his sleeve. Who will prevail once the solid steel structure is lowered around the ring?

Last week also saw an angry Randy Orton confront GM Mike Adamle. Orton claimed that Adamle sent him down as a backup referee during the Batista-Jericho match at Cyber Sunday, putting a recovering Orton into harm's way. Orton was on the receiving end of a Stone Cold Stunner and claims he may have re-injured himself. Upset over the matter, Orton looked directly into the camera and demanded Shane & Stephanie McMahon show up on tonight's Raw. Orton told Adamle he plans to have him fired due to his poor decisions. Orton took it a step further by calling Adamle a failure at just about everything, including his wife and kids. The GM wasn't pleased with Orton's comments and slapped him. Now with tensions high, will Orton get his wish granted and have Adamle removed? Or will the McMahon's show confidence in the current GM's abilities?

FInally, tonight will see a reunion of the legendary D-Generation X. The two will get into the ring to face a cocky, up-and-coming tag team consisting of ECW's The Miz & John Morrison. For several weeks now Miz & Morrison have been mocking DX and insulting towards the tag team calling them "D-Geriatric X". Last week even saw two fakes come to the ring dressed as HHH and HBK so that Miz & Morrison could give a display of what they expect to do. Tonight will be the true test as Miz & Morrison try to show that they are the best team there is. WIll they be successful, or will DX show what legends are made of?

Tune in to tonight's special 800th episode celebration of Raw starting at 8PM EST on USA!

Cena Returning, Knox Moving to Raw

According to the latest promo video pieces on Monday Night Raw, John Cena's headed back from his neck surgery and rehab within a month's time. Cena will be back just in time for the 2008 Survivor Series, but there's no official word on how he'll be involved in the PPV. Will he be wrestling, or will he be a guest at the PPV? You'd have to believe Cena will have unfinished business with Batista once he gets back. Batista didn't purposely hurt Cena, but most fans knew one battle between the two superstars wouldn't be enough. Cena will be in line for the World Heavyweight title and most likely resume his feud with the Animal. Expect an announcement soon from Raw GM Mike Adamle regarding the title match at Survivor Series.

Another promo piece recently show on Raw was for ECW superstar Mike Knox. Knox seems to be defecting to Raw after being a maninstay on ECW for some time now. Most recently, Knox was involved in a feud with Finlay, but now all of a sudden he's moving to Raw. These sorts of unexplained moves make the annual WWE Drafts seem even less important, and fail to create true buzz for a superstar. How about a storyline where Knox is disgruntled with his competition or lack of a title shot on ECW? Or a trade where some unused star on Raw is sent to ECW? For example, Snitsky and Knox seem interchangeable. No reason Snitsky can't take Knox' role on the ECW roster. Knox seemed capable of being a heel involved in the ECW title chase, besides Mark Henry, yet he wasn't used in that capacity so much. So maybe Knox becomes a Snitsky clone on Raw, or possibly he gets a boost and provides a new foe for Batista while he awaits his next battle against John Cena.

Raw Recap 10.27.08

Raw Recap from Tucson, AZ:

Raw opened with a "In Memory of Conrad Efraim "Special Deliver Jones" 1945-2008 slide, before launching into the show. Highlights were shown from Cyber Sunday with the World Heavyweight title match between Chris Jericho and Batista. Stone Cold Steve Austin won the fan vote to be special guest referee. During the encounter, Shawn Michaels, Randy Orton and JBL all got involved in the match. Eventually, Randy Orton knocked down Austin and tried to count the pinfall for Y2J. Batista escaped at 2, and Austin was back up to give Orton a Stunner. Austin went to Stun Jericho, but Jericho shoved him away. Y2J turned and Batista speared him down, then delivered a Batista Bomb to capture the victory and the title!

Raw went on the air announcing a Batista/Shawn Michaels vs. Chris Jericho/JBL tag team match. Jericho made his way down to the ring angrily grabbing a mic to address the fans and Batista. Jericho called last night's title loss the biggest screwjob in WWE history, saying GM Mike Adamle helped Batista win the title. Jericho said Austin acted as a totally biased referee and the end result is Batista is the new champ. Jericho said Batista didn't beat him, but had the help of an entire army helping him in a conspiracy. Jericho said he will exercise his rematch clause for next week and take back the title from Batista.

GM Mike Adamle headed down the ramp with a mic in hand. Adamle told Jericho he decided to make sure there would be no interference in Jericho's rematch against Batista, so it will be a stell cage match next week. Angrily Jericho paced the ring saying "you want to lock me in a cage?" Y2J stormed out of the ring, bumping Adamle on his way. Just then, Randy Orton came down to the ring and took a mic to talk to Adamle. Orton chastised Adamle for sending him out to referee last night, as it set his recovery back. Orton said he'll make sure Adamle doesn't get away with this. Orton looked into the camera and called for Stephanie and Shane McMahon to come to Raw next week and fire Adamle, or else Orton will leave WWE. Orton began to call out Adamle as a failure at all the jobs he's done in life. Orton mentioned Adamle's wife and kids, prompting Adamle to slap him in the face. Orton got enraged and got into Adamle's face, then stormed out of the ring.

Highlight footage shown from backstage at Unforgiven PPV when Orton got into CM Punk's interview space, and then Punk was attacked by Manu, Rhodes and Dibiase. With Punk down, Orton delivered his running kick to Punk's head, taking him out of the title match at the PPV.

CM Punk and Kofi Kingston shown walking backstage on their way out for a tag team match.

Kofi Kingston & CM Punk vs. Cody Rhodes & Ted Dibiase
World Tag Team title match

With the titles on the line, Cody Rhodes worked to wear down Kofi Kingston for quite some time. Eventually, Kingston made an impressive counter to escape Rhodes. Both Rhodes and Kofi tagged out, and Punk got on the top rope to springboard off and clothesline Ted Dibiase down. A swinging neckbreaker followed and Punk then ran over to knock Rhodes off the apron.

Punk continued with a furious offensive frenzy, eventually kneeing Dibiase in the corner. Manu got on the apron, but Punk quickly turned and kicked him off. All 4 competitors were in the ring, and Rhodes went to grab Punk. Kofi leapfrogged onto Rhodes and stayed on Rhode's shoulders, then propelled both of them over the top rope. Dibiase tried for a neckbreaker on Punk near the ropes. Punk held onto the ropes and Dibiase fell back. As Dibiase stood back up, Punk grabbed him and did the Go To Sleep, then captured the pinfall victory. Kofi and Punk are your new World Tag Team champions!

While Kofi and Punk celebrated in the ring, Rhodes, Dibiase and Manu aruged with one another on the ramp.

Winners: Kofi Kingston & CM Punk win via pinfall over Cody Rhodes & Ted Dibiase to become new World Tag Team Champions.

Intercontinental Title Match

Santino addressed Honky Tonk Man before the match and showed the Honk-a-Meter, saying in about a year he'll be greatest Intercontinental champion ever. Santino Marella told the cameraman to focus on his girlfriend The Glamazon. Just then, Beth Phoenix' theme music started to play and down the ramp came Charlie Haas in a blond wig and Phoenix' ring attire, carrying a Women's belt. Michael Cole dubbed him the "GlamaHaas".

Santino attacked Haas from behind to start things off, then threw him out of the ring at the commentator's table. Santino made the mistake of slapping Honky Tonk Man and then retreating back to the ring. All three guest commentators jumped out of their seats. Piper and Goldust went to the other side of the ring to prevent Santino from escaping. Honky Tonk man snuck into the ring behind Marella. As Piper and Goldust got in the ring, Santino turned and was clocked by Honky Tonk Man's guitar. Honky Tonk man's theme music played and the three legends celebrated in the ring, as an angry Beth Phoenix looked on.

Winner: No winner/disqualification when Honky Tonk Man, Roddy Piper and Goldust got involved.

Michael Cole and Jerry Lawler announced a six diva tag match coming up as well as Evan Bourne vs. Rey Mysterio. Up next, Cole said the new champion will speak.

A promotional video was shown for Mike Knox which indicated he'd be coming to Raw soon.

In the ring, commentator Michael Cole introduced the new World Heavyweight champion, Batista. The new champ came down to an ovation from the fans, and posed with his title in all the corners of the ring. Batista thanked the fans for their support in helping him regain the title he lost. Cole asked Batista about next week's rematch with Jericho in a steel cage. Batista said he's not concerned over a steel cage match since that's his playground, and Jericho has nowhere to run or hide. Batista vowed to still be champion after Raw next week.

Backstage, Candice Michelle, Kelly Kelly, and Mickie James were shown walking backstage on their way to the ring.

Candice Michelle, Kelly Kelly, & Mickie James vs. Jillian Hall, Katie Lea & Layla

Footage was shown of the brawl that broke out during last night's Diva Costume contest. Victoria was dressed up as a giant banana and tossed a banana at Mickie James when she was announced winner. Eventually, the face divas cleared the ring to help Mickie James celebrate her win in the contest.

Kelly Kelly went on a rampage in this match, as Mickie James eluded Katie Lea to tag her in. Kelly was able to ram into Katie's stomach from the apron then flipped over the rope into the ring. Katie was able to use several other impressive moves, and revved the crowd up as she ran and jumped on the corner where Katie Lea was. Katie shoved Kelly down and went for a pin, however Candice was able to grab Katie's leg from ringside. Jillian and Layla ran over to go after Mickie and Candice outside the ring, but they were both knocked down. Meanwhile in the ring, Kelly was able to set up Katie for the K2 to win the match.

Winners: Mickie James, Kelly Kelly & Candice Michelle win by pinfall over Jillian Hall, Katie Lea and Layla.

JBL delivered a message on the Titantron from backstage. JBL called out Shawn Michaels for interfering in a business deal he had with Chris Jericho at Cyber Sunday. A commercial was shown for next week's Raw. It will have a special 8PM EST start time and be 3 hours long to commemorate Raw's record-breaking 800th episode.

Evan Bourne vs. Rey Mysterio

Highlights were shown from last night's Mysterio vs. Kane No Holds Barred match. Kane seemed to have the match in control, but Mysterio made a major comeback and eventually splashed onto Kane to win it. An interview was shown prior to the match with Evan Bourne and Rey Mysterio. Bourne told Rey he's been waiting all his life for this opportunity and plans to defeat him tonight.

Bourne thought he had Rey down and went to the top rope for the Shooting Starpress. Mysterio got up and tried to battle Bourne, but Bourne shoved him down. Bourne jumped onto Mysterio to try to grab his legs for a rollup pin. Mysterio countered it to slingshot Bourne into the ropes, then delivered a 619. Rey tried to springboard off the ropes, but Bourne avoided him. Bourne jumped onto Rey's shoulders from behind, then tried another roll-up pin. This time Rey reversed it and rolled up Bourne for the winning pin.

After the match, Rey extended a handshake to Bourne who was angry at losing. Bourne shook his hand, but just then flames erupted from the top of the ramp, and Kane headed their way. Rey told Bourne he'd handle Kane on his own, so Bourne got out of the ring. Kane got into the ring and began to decimate Mysterio, prompting Bourne to re-enter the ring and help Rey fight Kane. The two men were able to use high kick moves to Kane to knock him down. Just then, Mark Henry rushed to the ring. Evan Bourne used the ropes to swing and dropkick Henry, then tried to jump over the ropes. Henry caught him in the air. Rey saw it and went towards the ropes to help, but Kane was back up and grabbed Rey for a huge Chokeslam. Henry rolled Bourne back into the ring and did the World's Strongest Slam. Kane and Henry stared down at the two fallen wrestlers then gave each other a look.

Highlights were shown from earlier in the show when Orton got into Adamle's face and called him a failure at life. Adamle slapped Orton, prompting Randy to get angry then leave the ring enraged.

Shawn Michaels & Batista vs. JBL & Chris Jericho

Just as Jericho arrived to the ring, footage was shown backstage of JBL giving Shawn Michaels a beatdown in a hallway. JBL repeatedly punched HBK then tossed him against walls and light fixtures. Lawler yelled for someone to get some help as JBL shoved Michaels through a door in the hall, then slammed it shut. Jericho was looking on from the ring and smiled at what went down. JBL arrived to the ring after taking care of business with HBK. Y2J stood in the ring and applauded JBL's work.

Batista came to the ring by himself since Shawn Michaels had been decimated backstage prior to the match. Jericho and JBL did as expected with a serious doubleteam beating of Batista. The two heels effectively worked to wear down the champ, distracting the ref at times so the other man could cheapshot The Animal. Eventually Batista cleared the ring of both men, clotheslining Jericho off the apron into the commentary table. Raw went to commercial with Batista yelling out at JBL and Jericho.

Raw returned with Batista in control, delivering a hard clothesline to Jericho. Jericho was able to counter an Irish Whip to the ropes, and Batista went after JBL who hit him from behind. Jericho took advantage with a kick to the back of Batista's head. The heels again started to work on Batista and wear him down 2 on 1. Batista regained momentum again on a tag out by JBL to Y2J. Jericho crawled over for the cover and Batista escaped at 2.

Jericho pulled himself back to the apron and yelled for JBL to tag, but just then, Shawn Michaels emerged from backstage and limped down the ramp. HBK took his place on the side apron, fired up. Batista managed a tag but the ref had his attention on Jericho and missed the tag. Michaels pleaded with the ref. Jericho had left the ring and re-entered, trying to use the championship belt to hit Batista. Batista and JBL both ducked Jericho's attempt and HBK tried to hit Jericho with a Superkick. Jericho dropped to the mat and escaped the ring. As the ref was distracted, Batista grabbed JBL and delivered a Spinebuster, then a Batista Bomb to win it.

Shawn Michaels helped Batista to his feet, and the Animal hoisted his title up for Jericho to see from the ramp.

Winners: Batista & Shawn Michaels win via pinfall over JBL & Chris Jericho.

As Raw left the air, Michael Cole reminded fans of next week's 3 hour Raw with Miz/Morrison vs DX and Jericho vs. Batista in a steel cage for the World Heavyweight title.

At the end of the program, Adamle also announced the blockbuster Cyber Sunday match of Batista challenging Jericho for the World Heavyweight title. Santino is backed by his girlfriend, Beth Phoenix The Glamazon, who has helped him out on numerous occasions. What will Glamarella have in store for tonight's show?
